Excellent preparation for reading

The skill of sounding out words is critical to learning to read and write. This skill is not as easy to learn as many adults think. One needs to be able to recognize the sound value of letters instantly, and be able to blend those sounds to put together words, or for writing, to decompose the spoken words into sounds and letters. Used according to the instructions, this book provides an opportunity to build those skills, and is thus an excellent introduction to word reading.

This book is a follow on to My Book Of Rhyming Words (Kumon Workbooks), which should generally be completed first; this book continues to teach the skills of sounding out and writing simple words. If your child is already figuring out some words, but needs more practice sounding them out or writing them, starting with this book may be appropriate; if not, starting with that previous book will be better.

To make the learning process as easy as possible, most of the words in this book are composed of a single leading consonant with its most common sound, followed by a short vowel, followed by a single final consonant with its most common sound. Because the spellings of all the words in the book are regular, the student does not get confused with different sounds for the same letter, although the book does introduce cases of different letters for the same sound, in particular both c and k for the k sound. There are 57 of these three letter words, using all the letters except q, v, and z; in addition, toward the end of the book, the words "and", "in", and "on" are used.

The words are presented in groups of three or four, with each group of words rhyming so that the child can focus on formation of different words by varying only the initial letter of the word. For each group of words, there is a page where the words and their pictures are presented in random order to be recited, three times, then a page where each of the words in the group is traced, three times, with progressively lighter tracing guides. After three or four groups of words with the same vowel, there is a page or two where a sequence of words is followed through a maze, and then one additional page for each group of words where each word in the group is traced twice with even lighter tracing guides and then written once without a tracing guide.

These pages make up the first 54 pages of the book. On each page where a word is written, the word is spoken once, then the sounds of the individual letters are made as each letter is written. This reinforces the relationship between the sound of each letter and its corresponding shape in a way that highlights how words can be broken down into those individual sounds.

Following the first 54 pages, there are 10 pages of review, where each word is spoken and written once, or for some words twice, then 8 pages of "and" phrases, such as "gum and hum", then 8 pages of "in" and "on" phrases, such as "cat in hat" and "cat on hat", for a total of 80 workbook pages. With each successive group of pages, the proportion of tracing decreases and the proportion of writing without tracing increases.

I used this book with my 5 year old son, although it could be used with younger or older children at the appropriate stage of skill development. I sat by him when he worked on the book, to encourage him, help him figure out words where the picture was ambiguous, and to make sure he followed the instructions by sounding out the words and letters as he wrote them. By the end of the book, he could reliably identify words from the letters and write the words legibly.

As with all Kumon workbooks, this book is self paced, with a gentle progression. The progression in this book may seem minimal, but in the context of the Kumon preschool English workbook sequence, there is a strong, thorough progression, starting with hand eye coordination skills, then with letter formation and sounding, then with word sounding culminating with this workbook. After completing this workbook, the child is likely to be able to print clearly and legibly and is ready to start working on reading; in the case of my son, I then went on to a reading drills book, Remedial Reading Drills, which I had used as a remedial book for an older sibling but is also working fine for teaching nonremedial word reading to my son.

Note that as of this writing, this book is out of print but new copies are still available from various booksellers. I hope they will bring it back into print as some children may need both the Rhyming Words book and this Rhyming Words and Phrases book to fully master the skills required for sounding out and recognizing words. Certainly my son benefited from spending an extra month or two going through both books.

Great book of rhyming 3 letter words

This book is great for kids who know their alphabet and the sound that each letter makes. The book consists of short vowel words and rhyming phrases. There are rhyming words with the same ending from the five vowels. Examples of ending are am, at, ag, eg, ed, ell, it, ix, id, ot, ob, ox, ub, um, up, and ut . Your kids will have fun putting words in front of the ending sounds to make words. Great book to start your kids of learning to read, write and spell. My daughter is reading words and having fun doing it. I love this book and highly recommend it to kids who want to start learning to read and write.

This book is a well designed introductory book to help child recognize vowels. Tracing, repeating while saying the letter sound help the child become familiar with simple word. If you have a blackboard at home, combining it with this book can enhance the mastering of vowels in the short time.
The paper is thick and sturdy, printing is of large size and vivid color and there are ample space to practice.

Paul’s letter to the Galatians is one of the most creative and subversive of the New Testament writings, drawing its energy from the fierce controversy which, to his great distress, was disturbing the congregation recently founded by Paul. One of the major sources of inspiration for the Reformation, it was also one of the writings most frequently turned to by the Fathers, as the Church sought to establish itself as the Church of the Empire.

This commentary looks at some of the major commentators on the letter – Chrysostom, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Perkins, Lightfoot – and at the very different worlds which sprang from their readings.

The volume opens with an extended essay, setting the commentators in their historical setting and showing the close dialogue which exists among them. It then looks more closely at how they interrogate Paul’s text and at the way the text shapes their understanding of their worlds.

About the Author

Chris Moyer is a recent graduate of RIT, the Rochester Institute of Technology, with a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering. Chris has more than five years experience in programming with a main emphasis on cloud computing. Much of his time has been spent working on the popular boto client library, used for communicating with Amazon Web Services. Having studied under the creator of boto, Mitch Garnaat, Chris then went on to create two web frameworks based on this client library, known as Marajo and botoweb. He has also created large scaled applications based on those frameworks.

 

Chris is currently Vice President of Technology for Newstex, LLC, where he manages the technological development of migrating applications to the cloud, and he also manages his own department, which is actively maintaining and developing several applications. Chris lives with his wife, Lynn, in the New York area.

Extreme Programming Installed Preface

After a few months working as a developer in a small start-up company migrating existing services to the cloud, I started realizing that there was way too much work to be done just by myself. I started looking around for other developers like myself that could assist me, or replace me if I were to find a better and more exciting opportunity elsewhere. I quickly realized that there are so few people that actually fully comprehend the level of complexity it requires to develop a cloud-based application, and almost all these people were happy with their current companies.

I began to create a series of blog posts about working with cloud-based platforms, now still available at http://blog.coredumped.org" http://blog.coredumped.org , but soon realized that I could quite literally spend an entire year writing up everything there is to know. This documentation would be better placed in a reference book than simply scattered throughout several blog posts, so I decided to write this book.

What Is the Purpose of This Book?

This book isn’t designed as a tutorial to be read through from cover-to-cover. It’s not a guide for how to build an application for the cloud, but instead it’s designed as a reference point for when you have specific questions. When your boss hands you a new project and tells you to make it scale, check the patterns discussed in this book to see what fits. When you work on a project and you find a specific problem that you don’t know how to handle, pick this book up. If you’re trying to start on a new project, and you have a perfect idea, but you don’t know how to scale it, pick this book up. If you’re trying to modify an existing project to scale in the cloud, pick this book up. If you don’t know what kinds of applications you can build with cloud computing, pick this book up.

This book doesn’t invent many new patterns but simply shows you the tricks and new techniques that you need to consider while running them in the cloud. Although you can use any patterns discussed in this book in any sort of clustering environment, they’re designed to take full advantage of the services provided by cloud computing.

How Should This Book Be Used?

This book is divided into three parts. Everyone should read Part I, “Concepts,” for a basic understanding of cloud computing. In Part II, “Patterns,” you can skip through to the patterns you’re most interested in. If you’ve never developed any sort of cloud-based application, you may want to go over the example applications in Part III, “Projects,” so that you can see exactly what kinds of applications are best suited for this type of system.

Part I, “Concepts”

Part I is designed to give you a general concept of how to develop in the cloud. It’s designed to be read from start to finish and is broken into different key chapters important to development.

Where to Begin

The first question for most people now is, where do you start? How do you quickly begin developing applications? What if you don’t want to go through and read about all these things you could do and simply want to get into the meat of how things work?

By picking up this book, you’re already on the right track. You already know that you can’t simply go to a cloud provider and start launching servers and expect to get exactly what you want out of them. People who just pick up a cloud provider and don’t do enough research beforehand typically end up with lots of problems, and usually end up blaming the cloud provider for those problems. This is like buying a stick-shift car without first knowing how to drive it and then complaining to the dealership for selling it to you. If you don’t first do some research and preparation, you shouldn’t be surprised when you have problems with the cloud. If you’re not a developer, you probably would be better suited to using a third party to manage your cloud, but if you’re reading this book, I’m going to assume that you’re interested in more then just “let that guy handle it.”

This book open my eyes to building applications in the cloud. However it was not very instructional on the process. It presented highlevel perspectives that could not be implemented and tested. The book hits on a very important topic, and the author has a clear understanding of the material, process, however the reader has to do much reading between the lines to try and comprehend. Hopefull the online resources will address my remaining questions. I should point out that I am a beginner and require more explanation and guidance. Too much relevant information was hidden.

Better intros to EC2 elsewhere in the first 2/3, odd digression into personal web frameworks in the last 1/3

I just read this book mostly cover to cover. I didn't learn a lot that I didn't already know from reading "Programming Amazon EC2." But that would have been OK if the author had strongly documented his two personal web frameworks: botoweb and marajo as they seem like they might have been promising starting points for cloud development in an alternate universe, and then built some interesting applications with them. Unfortunately, they're little more than confusing digressions from using a more established framework like Django, and so I got little out of the book as a result.

A Misleading Title

With such a generic title, I expected a wide discussion of the technologies available.

Instead, the book would have been more aptly titled "How I Build Cloud Applications Using Amazon Web Services And My Own Framework"

There is a superficial look at offerings from Google and Rackspace before focusing completely on his own Amazon-based framework. A reviewer at Dr Dobbs commented " I was convinced that the author lacked substantial understanding of his topic, save for describing his own project." which reflects my own impressions.

Lovely Designs based on Japanese Art, Design and Culture

When I was growing up, my best friend Jean was a first generation Japanese American and I spent many hours at her house learning about Japan from her mother and lovely grandmother. Our cultures were very different as my father was Greek and my mother was from the hills of North Carolina. Her home was a true haven for me from our rambunctious family of seven home. Jean's grandmother didn't speak a word of English but was able to teach me much about Japanese art, most especially watercolor and origami.

That I am now a needlework designer certainly dates back to those early art lessons. Jean's parents were very modern but Grandmother was very traditional and the house was filled with gorgeous artwork that this book reminds me of so much. Coloring in it will be both an homage to the gracious woman who was willing to spend a lot of time teaching a wild and tomboyish young girl lessons in art and manners as well as a way for me to travel back to those days in my mind.

This is a smaller format book of 72 pages of designs in only 7 x 7 inches. The binding is a type of rubbery glue that is located at the top of the book. It makes getting to all sides of the design much easier and now that I have experienced it, I wish more coloring books had top binding (as do many art books). My only concern is that if I remove a page, it may "break" the binding at that point and take more than the one page off. The back of the book is a heavy cardboard that keeps the book stable, especially if you are working in-hand instead of on a hard surface.

The designs are printed on the front side of each bright white medium weight page with the backside blank. The designs range from open fairly easy to color to much more detailed and a bit more challenging. This is exactly the type of mix that I hope for in buying a new book as I can choose the right design for the mood and needs of my day.

My pencils and gel pens are working great with the paper but I will use a backing piece of freezer paper or cardstock if I decide to use markers or watercolors as they may leach through the back of the page.

I have purchased the three books available from this publisher (who is new to me.) The books are about Japan, India, and Butterflies. I like them all so well, I will certainly be buying more from this company in the future.

Exciting, brilliant pictures to color!

I couldn't help it. I had to order this book when it came up for pre-order. I love Japanese art!

I also couldn't stand it when I received it. I HAD to put my pens to work. If you color regularly, you KNOW what I am talking about.

I would like to note: Please choose fine line art pens or markers for this book. The lines are very tiny in places and anything larger could get frustrating.

Also of note: This book is top-bound, glued, like a neat'book design. Aka: The page comes off the glue binding, potentially taking others with it. This is why I have decided to discipline myself to take this book in order, against my usual. I took a picture to try and show what I mean.

I have also added some photos of the product, both colorized and not. Very exciting book.

Filled with Elegant, Striking & Mesmerizing Works of Art! This book is not for every colorist! Very detailed & shapes repeat!

This book is not for everyone, it is for those colorists who like very detailed, challenging coloring that takes a steady hand and a good eye , additionally you must like coloring the same shape over and over again in one illustration, which I personally find very calming and relaxing as I listen to TV in the evening.

I love this distinctive, petite square travel sized coloring book filled with its striking, delicate patterns and designs, each made up of fragile intricate lines and/or shapes that often repeat throughout the same image.

For those who love this type of coloring, you will be inspired and amazed at just how Elegant and Striking these delicate simple images become once you add color.

1. This little (6 ¾”x6 ¾”) book boasts 71 illustrations, printed one per page (the back of each page is blank) on medium weight, bright white paper.

2. The publisher of this little book has cleverly placed the binding at the top of the book making it more user friendly to left handed Colorists yet also great for those who are right handed.

3. The details are small and delicate; they take a steady hand, good eye and Colored pencils, Gel Pens, or Ultra Fine markers.

4. I Tested Fiskars Gel Pens, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners & Fibre Tips, and Stabilo point 88 and these DID NOT bleed through the pages in this little book.

5. Both Bic Mark it and Sharpies bleed through the paper a little, I removed the top title page in the book and use it to place under the page I am coloring when I use these markers.

6. Illustrations are pattern type illustrations with a variety of themes that include:

a. 10 illustrations boast fish as their theme, they all look like our common gold fish (a small member of the carp family native to east Asia) ,
b. 26 floral patterns with 8 of the images, delicate branches adorned with delicate flowers, artistically placed on the page like the cover picture,
c. 2 bonsai trees, one with leaves and one with flowers
d. 7 pattern illustrations featuring, 2 different types of birds as their theme
e. 9 flowing patterns created from geometric shapes
f. In the other 17 pattern illustrations you will find 2 dragons, 4 featuring tea pots, 1 with charming pandas, 1 with cats, 3 featuring geisha, 2 with Fan themes, 2 with Japanese style homes, 1 of Bamboo, and 1 of paper lanterns

7. I am adding the 3 pictures I colored to test this the color mediums in this book along with some images of the different themes used to help you decide if this book is just right for you!

Strongly recommended. To everyone. Particularly those who want to avoid fights.

Everyone who carries a firearm for self defense and everyone who is considering doing so should buy and study this book. It covers everything - mindset and and history, sociology and responsibility as well as equipment and training. It is well written and reflects decades of experience both as a peace officer and as a trainer of private citizens as well as peace officers. This book is specifically written for the private citizen.

I would also encourage those who oppose the concept of self defense to read it. We are all responsible for our own safety and that of those who depend on us. Pretending someone else will protect you doesn't make it so. This book will give you some perspective, whether you eventually change your mind or not. Not everyone should carry a gun, but everyone should know about the world around them and how to safely handle a firearm should they encounter one.

The title might be a little misleading those who don't know Tom and his work. It is not about street fighting or bar brawling, but about avoiding fights if possible and winning them if they are unavoidable. It is as appropriate for a 90 year old woman as a 21 year old man.

The kindle edition is the most expensive I have bought, presumably because of the color plates. Unfortunately the initial download has a big red X where most of the plates should be. Presumably Amazon will push out a fixed edition. For now, I would recommend the hard copy.

I have read the earlier editions of this book, and this edition is the most up-to-date, and is made up of material and advice that truly, "works." Tom's curriculum has allowed AT LEAST 62 people (to date May 2015) to save their own lives or the lives of others, in self defense situations. His record is unparalleled in civilian circles. This book trims down time tested knowledge and techniques into everything you need, and nothing you don't. I can't think of a better definitive textbook that will get you up to speed to deal with a self-defense scenario. This should be required reading for all civilians that carry a pistol for self-defense.

In 1957, Morris Jessup was approached by two mysterious Naval officers who informed Jessup that a man, who called himself Carlos Allende, had extensively annotated Jessup’s seminal book "The Case for the UFO" with a bizarre commentary involving time travel, electromagnetic forces, even the teleportation of a battleship.

The story, already a little strange, was made even more peculiar when he discovered that the Office of Naval Research took things much mucher further, even going the trouble of re-printing this annotated version for limited distribution within the Office of Naval Research. They even used multi-colored inks to simulate the pens used in the handwritten notes.

This book — printed by the Varo Manufacturing Company of Garland, Texas — is now known as the infamous Varo Edition.

A must read for anyone interested in UFO phenomenon

The book is great, but the history surrounding it is one of the most bizarre stories ever. Gray Barker's preface unfortunately does not contain all the details. But it can be found in other sources, like e.g. Joseph Farrell's book Secrets Of The Unified Field and of course on the Internet.

A Book Ahead of It's Time, but The Notes Were VERY Annoying

The title pretty much says it all. I found some of the work done in the original work interesting. It gave me the feeling that the author was ahead of his time. The biggest issue I had was all the side notes that were added. I thought maybe it would be interesting to have them there which is why I bought the book, but they were such a huge distraction that I ended up putting it down over and over again till I just got sick of it.

While the book and the material by the original author was quite interesting, I would recommend trying to get a copy of it without all the extra notes. It felt kind of like trying to read a book, but every 45 seconds or so someone would come over and poke you in the arm just to distract you. After 10 minutes of that, I just gave up on it.
