Excellent Tutorial and Reference

I find this book to be a very good introduction to Inkscape. The tutorials are well chosen and serve to illustrate a wide range of the functionality available. Bah clearly knows his subject. He introduces some clever techniques that probably would not occur to the typical user (like myself).

I have the Kindle version of the book. By having the book on Kindle for the PC I was able to see color versions of the photos. What really worked well was being able to have the tutorials open side by side with Inkscape on the screen. This allowed me to easilly read the tutorial while I worked.

The book is well organized and seems to provide a level of detail that will enable most users to master the program. There were a couple of spots where I would have liked to see a bit more detail, but all in all I thought the book was very good.

Needs improvement

A good reference, but the online version is actually more usable. The examples cannot be followed, practically-speaking, without resorting to the online version. (Note: I am using the Kindle version of the book, not the printed version which may be different). It would be even better if the thing were converted to a pay video series so a person can actually see what is being done, as there are far too many buzzwords for the average person to follow it.
Inkscape itself is a pretty good program. I did have it go completely haywire as I was finishing up a project, and lost all my work, so it's not without bugs. (In this case, the ruler at the top and sides went to very large numbers with scientific notation (!), and the work was all gone - no page section was present anymore. :(
But it's free, so what do you expect?

Older edition than printed copy

Book is OK, software is great option to the other well know product. Inkscape is great for university assignments, where you need to make something stand out as different. Two main disappointments with kindle version though:
1) Kindle version one edition behind the printed copy, doesn't have all the new features
2) as others stated, does not give full instructions on how to do task (assumes you are reading from front to back and recall what you learnt in earlier tasks). Annoying if you search for a topic, continually have to go backwards to find all the instructions.
Overall, OK for getting up to speed but needs updating.

mixed bag of choices, "pro" - maybe ? maybe not.. you decide

I always liked "Apress" books and keep purchasing them side by side with O'Reilly titles. Most "Apress" books and authors give very "in the trenches" and "gotcha" oriented approach, while O'Reilly seems very dry . Well, here we have 1053 page volume that is trying to cover most issues and applications that any Linux sysadmin will come across. Plenty of advise, plenty of "do that", "do not do this" options. However, I gave it only 3 (three) stars - here is why:

1) A lot of "entry level" stuff that takes at least 15%-20% of the book. You just do not call the book "Pro" and show "grep localhost /etc/*" on page 97. All previous pages are written about history of Linux, why you need a Linux server, blah-blah - that can be easily skipped. Just randomly opened a page .. page 358 - how to use "df -h" command and what it does. What a revelation! IMHO, a book called "pro" need to spend a lot of time dealing with nitty -gritty stuff - like building HA systems, integration of Spamassassin+postfix+clamav, integration of SVN+Wiki+Bugzilla+Apache - we have built a similar system here, but I would love to read more from authors who know how to architect a scalable solution for 200+ servers. That would be "Pro"

2) The second drawback is very selective choice of applications at hand. I know that Puppet, for example, is an excellent package and has plenty of features - but would you mention at least Cfengine that been long enough and has a huge installation base?! Give a half of page explaining pros/cons Cfengine vs Puppet - and explain your choice for Puppet (Chapter 19) - yet give people an option to explore Cfengine. Or Chapter 10 gives a verdict to Postfix - "postfix is much easier to understand, configure and troubleshoot" - so no reference to Sendmail!!! OK, I agree with you - but can you give a half-page reference list to Sendmail choices?

Contains Linux system administration advice and recipes.

I have found this book useful, being a Windows admin who doesn't drop into a Linux terminal session very often. The book contains the usual man pages, "history of Linux", etc. The real reason to purchase it is the included advice and recipes. Every chapter that I have read has a real "I've done this many times" feeling to it. I have yet to find a technical mistake in the information that I have gotten from this book (I can't say that about most websites).

This book is not a complete reference to the most popular utilities or the newest distributions. It falls short of a complete Linux reference due to the fact that the authors seem to only discuss tools that they have personal experience with. This book also won't teach you how to become a top-notch Linux System Administrator. What it will do, is quickly point a non-Linux system administrator in a possible direction when they need to make configuration changes. I have also found that this no-batteries-or-Internet-required reference comes in handy when working on Linux machines in remote locations.

A Windows or Mac system admin may find this book a welcome addition to their technical library. A Linux system admin may want to look elsewhere.

Broadest & Most Up-To Date View of Embedded Linux Development

This excellent Developer's Guide to Embedded Linux Systems Development has several features to recommend it, among the sparse other choices for this important topic. It is extremely up to date, takes a broad and pedagogically sound view of the Embedded Linux Environment and takes the extra step to advise on choice of a board and development environment (how to make the choice, a piece of information that won't easily go stale) and in describing the entire Embedded Systems Development Process. It describes hot to select a board and the accompanying development environment, what to do when you get your board and how to make it boot, how to develop a Customized (to your development style and application/hardware environment) Linux Environment (Development Version and Deliverable to the Consumer), how to debug applications,the nature of hard and soft Real-Time requirements, system tuning, and how to handle field updates to the software. A vitally important chapter that should be included in every Embedded Systems development book (not just Linux), but that as far as I know is included in no other book, Chapter 17 on Deploying Applications talks about all of the issues in creating an "Embedded First-Class Final Product".
