Parents, please look through the preview of this book. As an adult, this is superb.

I love graphic novels and I love Neil Gaiman, but parents—please look through the preview of this book.

Amazon recommends this book for kids aged 8 through 12. I’m not sure parents are aware of the drawn slit-throat-gushing blood. Before purchasing, consider how your kids will react to a drawn depiction of the mom, dad, and sibling lying dead on the floor and beds, covered in blood.

From an adult perspective, I think this book is great. The team did an excellent job capturing the story and portraying it with top-notch, full-colored artwork. In my review of Gaiman’s original book I stated a desire for more illustrations—they delivered! The essence of everything is here and in superb detail.

This book is worthy of the other 5-star ratings it has received. However, because it is being marketed to children, some of whom are still impressionable with fantasy (e.g. Santa Clause) a lower rating is needed in order to raise awareness. Parents, you know your own children, proceed with this understanding.

Beautiful graphic adaptation of The Graveyard Book.

"The Graveyard Book: Volume 1" is the first volume in a two-part graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 2008 children's novel "The Graveyard Book." Artist P. Craig Russell, who is a long-time collaborator with Gaiman and took care of the graphic adaptation, figures prominently on the cover, but be warned that each chapter is drawn by a different artist: Kevin Nowlan (chapter 1), P. Craig Russell (chapter 2), Tony Harris & Scott Hampton (chapter 3), Gale Showman (chapter 4), Jill Thompson (chapter 5) and Stephen B. Scott (Interlude).

In the 192 pages of the first volume, which covers Chapter One through Five plus the Interlude of the original novel, we start with the toddler who will become known as Bod (short for Nobody), whose knack for wandering off (to the despair of his parents) saves his life as the mysterious stranger Jack slaughters his family for reasons as yet unknown. Bod had wandered off to the nearby graveyard, where he's adopted by its ghostly residents and also taken under the wings of the enigmatic Silas, who's neither living nor death and makes Jack lose the trail. In the next chapters, we see how Bod grows up as a child, learns the alphabet, meets up with Scarlett and becomes friends with her (and gets her into trouble), as well as his adventure with the ghouls. We also see how his desire to help witch Elizabeth, who's buried outside the graveyard in unconsecrated ground, get a headstone, leads him again into trouble, and this volume ends right after the Macabray dance with the short Interlude, in which we meet up again with Jack.

Story-wise, it stays very faithful to the original prose novel, with words and art meshing very well together. It really shows that Gaiman is equally adept at working in prose as well as the very different comic book-format. Overall, the art gives a very cohesive interpretation, and when you move onto a new chapter and a new artist, the style never changes so much it will jar you out of the story. Of course, because each artist has his or her own signature style, this may lead to personal preferences. In my case, it's the art by Tony Harris & Scott Hampton I liked the least. I would give their chapter 3 stars, while I would award Jill Thompson's art 4 stars. But the rest get a solid 5 stars, with the incomparable P. Craig Russell getting 5+ stars. How I wish he had done the complete graphic novel himself, but alas... Anyway, a beautiful graphic adaptation of an already wonderful children's novel, that really makes the story come alive. Recommended!

An Excellent Graphic Adaptation of a Wonderful Book!

Let me state up front that I love Neil Gaiman's books, and I especially loved The Graveyard Book. So I was either going to love this adaptation or be disappointed and end up hating it. As you can guess from my rating, I loved it. Can I give it more stars? Six or seven? Best thing I've read this year.

I received a free copy from the publisher in return for an honest review. I will follow my usual pattern of giving that copy to one of my teen patrons. But I will be buying another copy for myself and a copy of volume 2 when it is published this Fall.

I bought this book because my granddaughter was reading it for school. (She is 12) and I wanted to
see what the kids were reading and whether it would help them develop more empathy. I do believe it did

A book that actully made me cry

Amazing.

Walk In My Shoes is a touching novel about a girl and her family that lived in Pakistan and have immigrated to Australia. Australia is everything they have ever dreamed of. But after two years in refugee camp, and many unwelcome surprises, it seems they have lost hope.

Touching, amazing and the true side of what is actually happening to Pakistani refugees in Australia. Walk In My Shoes really makes you feel as if you are walking in the shoes of an Pakistani refugee.

Every Australian of reading age should read this book

Walk in my Shoes is about a Pakistani refugee family who arrive in Australia after going through a circuitous, arduous and dangerous journey. When they arrive they are full of hope and believe they are finally safe. However, the family is immediately placed in a detention centre out in the desert where they linger for almost two years before being released. The loss of hope, the anguish and pain this family suffers while they try to prove to the Australian government that they are indeed refugees is excrutiating.

The reading age of this book is 9-12 years but is suitable for all age groups and I would recommend it as essential reading not only for school children but for all Australians. It is difficult not to feel deep compassion for those people who have suffered so terribly in their own countries and have come to Australia (even if they have by-passed the legal channels).

It gives another perspective to the refugee debate quite differnet from the government's stance and is likely to produce a public outcry about the way refugees are being treated in Australia. Indeed as the protagonist of the novel points out - why if we weren't refugees would we come to Australia on such dangerous unseaworthy boats? Terrorists are never going to travel this way.

Well written, a Must Read

This historical novel has characters that are very real, who could all be placed in a modern day setting. Three families with four children, trying to raise them the best they know how. How much does a career mother influence her children in regards to love and work? Does a child miss something in a mother if he is adopted? How should faults and forgiveness be accepted? This book raises many questions pertinent to today, without giving all the answers. Exceptionally well written.

Rita Marley grew up in the slums of Trench Town, Jamaica. Abandoned by her mother at a very young age, she was raised by her aunt. Music ran in Rita's family, and even as a child her talent for singing was pronounced. But Rita kept her self-respect, and when Bob succumbed to cancer in 1981, she was at his side. Throughout, this memoir emphasizes Rita's own substantial musicianship, first as part of Bob Marley's backing vocalists, the I-Threes, and later her own career after his death "carrying on a legacy that means so much to the world." Here she tells of growing up poor in Jamaica, loving the ambitious Marley, and how her life changed when he became pop music's first Third World superstar, only to die at 36. Alfarita Constantia Anderson met Bob Marley by waiting for him on the way from Jamaica's legendary Studio One. He introduced her to Rastafarianism, and when she saw the stigmata on Haile Selassie's hand during the Ethiopian emperor's visit to Jamaica, she "went home screaming and cheering." Many might call her relationship with Marley troubled, what with its physical confrontations early on and outside affairs and offspring later, but Rita says she decided to "be strong, stand up and fight," despite his frequent and open infidelity. Eventually, "as long as [she] was respected [and] given whatever [she] needed financially," she "let him be." A definite page turner for all fans of the Marleys.

Excellent book - what a story, I can't believe the trials and tribulations Rita went through. This is beautifully written and easy to read, I started Tim White's book which is supposed to be the ultimate biography but I can't read more than a few pages a day because its more like a college lesson in Bob Marley than an biography. I couldn't put this book down. I would have given 5 stars except I didn't like the part where she talks about Bob having just one underpants - was it really necessary to mention that, or was it just to add some spice, she says she wants readers to know where he came from, but at this point he had returned from Delaware so I'm skeptical about this one pair thing. I also don't understand how she allowed Mr. Marley to flaunt his many lovers, coming to his hotel room while on tour is one thing but when he brought them to her house [where she lived with their kids] couldn't she at least have made him aware that she wouldn't stand for that, he was the breadwinner but still how can one show up at your wife's house with different girlfriends. I found that very disturbing and I'm sorry that Rita had to go through that. But I admire the way she has carried on Bob's legacy and didn't bear a grudge and how she kept her head above water. I only wish I had been able to attend one of his concerts, unfortunately growing up in Africa I didn't get the chance. Thank you Rita for your strength and you telling us this incredible story.

Simply Amazing!!!

I am a Bob Marley fan but have always admired and felt sorry for Rita. He was a handsome and complex man that made women come running. Rita was always there because of her position(s). I always wondered how she was able to take it all so gracefully - well this is the book that tells the greatest story ever. It's a story of life, love, sorrow, joy, success, and much much more. I'm so grateful to the one and only MRS Marley for letting us in by writing this book. I could not put it down. She had endure some pain and disrespect by some heartless ******! Oh but look who is still standing and where she is standing. Rita - you are an inspiration to me,and it is my hope to meet you face to face one day.

Interesting Insights

I was so excited to read this book, for multiple reasons.
Rita, the wife of the late Bob Marley, worked very closely with her husband on a professional level,
but I felt like her story was never truly understood.
This book shed light on many of the events that took place in both Rita's and her husband's life.
She explains her feelings during pivital times in her career and personal life and how she handled the hard, painful times.
I finished the book with a great deal of respect for Rita and the strength she displayed.

Definitely an interesting read! I couldn't put it down!

About the Author

Sophia Loren has a film career that spans five decades and includes an Academy Award. She is also the author of the cookbook, In the Kitchen with Love. She divides her time between Geneva, Switzerland, and Los Angeles. Alison Harris is a freelance photographer based in Paris. Her work has been featured in Enchanted Liguria: A Celebration of the Culture, Lifestyle and Food of the Italian Riviera; The Good Cook; Marcella Cucina; The New Provencal Cuisine; and the critically acclaimed Cooking the Roman Way: Authentic Recipes from the Home Cooks and Trattorias of Rome. Giorgio Armani is an Italian fashion designer, particularly noted for his menswear. He is considered to be one of Sophia Loren’s best friends.

La Cucina "Sfiziosa" della Sophia Loren!

Beauty is the theme that runs through "Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories." The beauty of Italy, whether it be Genoa or Naples, and the beauty of Ms. Loren, and her family, and friends, shine in this wonderful cookbook. It is a Latin custom to share food, recipes, memories, stories, and smiles when one is in la cucina. Ms. Loren is a very down-to-earth cook, and she invites you into her kitchen to share her recipes and memories. She wants to confide the "piccoli secreti" ("little secrets") of her table, her cooking, and her kitchen. She shows treasured photos and her famous zest for life; to her, "family is sacred."
These recipes are authentic. I have tested several of them and find them to be excellent. The recipes are minimalist and leave plenty of room for improvisation, so you can substitute seasonal fresh ingredients or add your own version of a dish to hers. Although this cookbook has meat and meatless recipes, I have found that many of the traditional meat-based recipes may be adapted for a vegetarian without much fuss. Most of the recipes have full-color pictures, with beautiful food styling.
Many of the recipes reflect Ms. Loren's Neapolitan heritage. She offers "Ragù alla Napoletana" (Neapolitan Stuffed Beef Rolls and Sauce), which is a classic meal for Sunday family dinners. The making of the ragù, or sauce, is a ritual in the Italian kitchen. For vegetarians, there are two wonderful recipes: "Spaghetti con Salsa al Pomodoro Semplice" (Spaghetti with Basic Tomato Sauce) and "Spaghetti con Pomodoro Crudo" (Spaghetti with Uncooked Tomato Sauce.)
This cookbook offers recipes and guidelines for preparing everything from Antipasti to Dolci. One can use this book to make an authentic Italian dinner, with all the courses, from start-to-finish. Here is one of my favorite meals for casual entertaining, with recipes taken from Ms. Loren's book: Antipasti ("Melone e Prosciutto" e "Bruschetta"); Zuppa ("Il Minestrone"); Il primo ("Linguine con Salsa Sophia"); Il secondo ("Agnello Bella Napoli"); Dolce ("Torte di Ricotta.")
While Ms. Loren's cookbook does favor Neapolitan specialities, such as pizza, baccalà, and tirami-sù, she also offers classic recipes from Rome, Genoa, and Sicily.
"La cucina sfiziosa" is "the whimsy kitchen." "Sfizioso, -a" is a colorful Neapolitan word that Ms. Loren defines on page 178 as ". . . that little extra touch that takes a dish beyond its traditional form and adds a hint of fancy, sparking the curiosity and satisfying the most difficult palate."
I enjoy the spirit, imagination, creativity, and love that I find in these recipes and memories. Grazie Sophia Loren, la belleza della cucina e del cinema!

Finally-a cookbook that has it all !!!

The book is filled with loads of recipes for the novice as well as a seasoned cook. I am a vegetarian and I found many recipes that meet my requirements. There is a large variety of recipes, most of which you could serve to your family or to company. The pictures and info on Sophia over the years is a bonus. I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys Italian cuisinne

ABSOLUTLY BEAUTIFUL

This book is wonderful. The photos alone are worth the money. I own a small restaurant / lounge called, Hunter's ROADHOUSE and on Fridays I like to run a special from a famous person or chef. I have made several from this book. I get rave reviews on Sophia's, Baked pasta, meat & tomatoes. I have not had one complaint on any of her recipes. My Father loved her and so do I. Thanks, Sophia and Thank You, Amazon.com for letting me express my feelings.
