Cultural Anthropology NOT Dance History: Biased Agenda

The editors of this book want to be cultural anthropologists and have a feminist, anti-ballet agenda. There are over 50 articles in this book and only one is about ballet and it is about travesty dancers during the Romantic Period. Ballet is discussed negatively in several other articles that deal with other forms of dance. There is an article about Lincoln Kirstein who helped George Balanchine found the NYC Ballet, but this article is about Kirstein's desire to be the next Diaghilev, not about the NYC Ballet. What a disappointment that the editors could not have found a better article. There is a section called "America Dancing" that has no articles about dance in Broadway or films; there is no mention of ABT or the NYC Ballet outside the Kirstein/Diaghilev article. Just about every article in this section deals with modern dance. Surely America has more styles of dance than modern. In contrast, over 20 articles deal with dance as cultural anthropology, and four articles deal with contact improvisation, editor Albright's preferred style of dance. Most of the articles are written in a dry, pedantic style that is difficult to read. I had to purchase this book for a dance history course and will be selling it as soon as the semester is over. No one in my class outside of the instructor likes this book.

I needed this for a class in Dance across world cultures. For a textbook it did its job in that it provided me with information to use for research papers etc. Other than that, the book was boring, I Enjoy dance and everything about it but this book was just blah. I only read what I needed for class and now that its over I am not interested in reading it on my own.

I am getting goats in the spring and I had a lot of questions. Nigerian Dwarf Goats not only answered many of my questions, but it taught me things I didn't realize I didn't know. Usually I read ebooks and then delete them to free up space, but this book is going to stay in my library because I'm sure I will be referring to it often.

Everything You Need to Know About Nigerian Goats and Didn't Even Realize You Should Ask!

WOW - What a fantastic book. I'm in the process of planning a new homestead and I'm getting goats. I'd been on the fence regarding breed, so I wanted to learn more breed-specific information than the general "raising goats" information. This book completely delivered!

Not only did I confirm that this will be the best breed for my homestead, but I also learned about the particular quirks of the breed so that I can prepare for them before I make the investment. (I've completely rethought my original plan for housing them due to the information in this guide - thanks for saving me that money! ) City dwellers will be pleased to learn that this breed will work well in their locations, given a few points of preparation that are thoroughly explained in the guide.

The author is extremely knowledgeable, and while the book is in depth, it's easy to understand and enjoyable to read.

Goats can be a wonderful addition to your homestead, but you need to do your research to choose the right breed and to set up your property for the best possible relationship with your new caprine buddies. :) I strongly recommend this book to anyone thinking of starting a herd.

It touches on a lot of questions a new or soon to be goat owner should be asking. Items that I found particularly helpful include, a definition of terms section, why use goats for milk, advantages of goat milk, investment costs and ongoing costs. The issue of space would be needed is also discussed. The best reason to buy this overview is the great advice you will get before you go to purchase the first goats. This guide will help you start strong with good stock. Lesa Wilke is a long time, award winning Nigerian Dwarf goat breeder, respected in the field. Reading this book will give you the answers you need to get started raising milking goats, and particularly the Nigerian Dwarf breed.

The las story by Ms. James is a big waste of time. If you are bored beyond belief with nothing left to read & if you already own this bundle then you go ahead & give it ago. Just be warned, it could turn you into a narcoleptic in no time! Good price for 3 books. I recommend owning it.

Not a Keeper

I have found the two earlier editions on my shelf to be absolutely invaluable ~ they are disintegrating from heavy use. But, I'm afraid that the old ones will wear even more, because the hair line print, both the text and the drawings in this edition (undoubtedly the best edition yet for content) is a chore. I don't know what they were thinking ~ going green by saving ink? I'm going to try to adapt to the pale gray but I'm not optimistic about succeeding. A return may ultimately be in order along with the purchase of a new copy of an older more legible edition. Two point five stars for now, but will re-comment if I find it to be keeper.

OK --- this is an addendum to above: The fifth edition is for me NOT a keeper - I've given it to a friend who has only rare need for this type of reference material, in contrast to my frequent need and use. I have normal eyesight, and the text in the fifth edition is both pale and diminutive to such an extent that I find it illegible in any practical sense. I'm very disappointed in that I was eagerly looking forward to this new edition. The drawings are usable, but taxing for the same reasons. What we have is Beethoven's Fifth delivered underwater. What a bummer! Two stars.

The content is excellent. The font used is absolutely horrendous and makes the book nearly unreadable

[[VIDEOID:moCGQ9YG4ZZ8ZM]]I have been looking for a book such as this for years. I was not aware of this book until it became available to me in the Amazon Vine program.

It's a very comprehensive book that covers all aspects of building construction. And by comprehensive, I mean exactly that. It covers everything from the building site to foundations, floor systems, wall systems, roof systems, moisture & thermal protection, doors & windows, finish work, mechanical & electrical systems and notes on materials.

If you've been curious about what it takes to plan and construct a building but you're not a contractor, this is a great overview. Perhaps you won't be fully equipped to build a garage or shed if you've never built one before or had any experience in construction. But at the very least this will get you up to speed with the lingo and concepts involved in construction. It will enable you to communicate more easily with an architect or contractor if you are having a house built. If nothing else, it is a wonderful way to learn more about building construction if you are not really into building construction.

The content in this book is excellent. It is illustrated very well.

What is not excellent is the font used throughout the book, I can barely read this. The font weight is very thin and the font face is horrendous, I don't think the publisher could have chosen a worse font if they had tried.

I very nearly rated this book 2 stars because of the difficulty I am having reading it. But the content is king so I've given it 4 stars. If legibility is top on your list, then you will definitely be disappointed in this book no matter how good the content is.

I recommend this book with reservations.

Excellent resource

I've been a fan of Ching and this book specifically for years. I've "borrowed" my brother's copy he used for school many times. He finally had to ask for it back.

This book is a great, really great resource. Certainly for a school setting, but also for a homeowner or DIY person. No, it won't make you a contractor, but it will definitely provide the basics of what is/isn't allowed, how a structure works, materials, etc. In fact, I think this book is so comprehensive that it can be a little hard to follow the text, even though it isn't poorly written and the topic isn't esoteric. There's just so much information at times I find myself a bit overwhelmed. This is when I take a small break and then get back to it.

This edition includes newer, more relevant content about "sustainable" building, recent developments in technology and building materials, as well as a companion website. If you're a serious DIY person or want to tackle a larger project, I think this book is a must have as it will provide far more information than an episode on HGTV or a seminar at the larger home centers. If you're a student in architecture or similar areas then this is probably part of your book list.

I really like this new edition, however, I DO agree with the other review about the print. It certainly is more faint and a little harder to read than the print in my brother's book (probably ten years old now). This is really the only bad thing I can say about it, but content wise, editing, writing, illustrations, et.al. I can't complain. Highly recommended.

As a person charged with organizational change at our college (the largest two year technical college in the US, with over seventy thousand students, more than three thousand employees, four campuses, two public television stations, three unions and an annual budget of over 207 million dollars a year), I am always looking for ways to get our employees to see a clearer picture.

We have been using "Teeter Totter" as part of our leadership effectiveness training and have noticed several things. First, of course, is the expected "you want us to what?" and the "this won't take more than five minutes" responses. Second, we see a lot of conscious effort on the part of the teams to actually make the exercise work. Third, we have seen some real glimpses of learning. When using this exercise with our campus leadership teams, I noticed an increase in understanding of the dynamics at play. As team members gingerly stepped onto the board, the member who was acting as the coach for the team kept saying "don't just look at where your opposite is on the board, feel where he or she is. Feel the board, feel your contact with the board, feel the other member and what they are feeling." In the de-brief, the conversation turned quickly to how we can understand what the other members on our team are going through during their daily jobs.

Linda Booth Sweeney, Ed. D., is an educator, researcher and writer dedicated to helping people of all ages integrate an understanding of complex, living systems into learning, decision making and design. She has worked with Outward Bound, MIT's Sloan School of Management, and Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development (SEED). She is the author of The Systems Thinking Playbook; When a Butterfly Sneezes: A Guide for Helping Children Explore Interconnections in Our World Through Favorite Stories; Connected Wisdom: Living Stories about Living Systems; and numerous academic journals and newsletters. Dennis Meadows is emeritus professor of systems policy and social science research at the University of New Hampshire, where he was also director of the Institute for Policy and Social Science Research. In 2009 he received the Japan Prize for his contributions to world peace and sustainable development. He has authored ten books and numerous educational games, which have been translated into more than 15 languages for use around the world. He earned his Ph.D. in Management from MIT, where he previously served on the faculty, and has received four honorary doctorates for his contributions to environmental education.
