Lee Lowell is one of America's leading options professionals and is the coeditor of Mt. Vernon Research's Xcelerated Profits Report and Editor of Instant Money Trader and Triple-Zone Profit Trader. He has been an options trading professional for seventeen years and spent six years in the options trenches as a market-maker on the floor of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). Good, but incomplete guidance/advice

This book cuts to the chase in presenting four winning options strategies (see book description above for all 4, which you can lookup), which will make beginners happy as there's too much confusing options advice out there. But it falls badly short on two absolutely critical aspects of trading: exits, and position sizing (or money management).

For example, Lee presents option credit spreads as his favorite strategy, and it's certainly a powerful strategy, but of his 13 example spread trades, not one was a loser, or close to a loser! There's very little treatment of when and how to get out, nor how many spreads to put on given one's capital - areas where I really wanted to hear his analysis, because he has survived in the markets for a while. That's a huge deficit, because the potential risk:reward ratio of spreads is usually at least 4:1. So even though the odds of a winning trade can be greatly in your favor, the overall expectancy (read Van Tharp if you don't know what expectancy is) can kill you. You still need a plan to get out or at least hedge losses, and this book has little to say about that.

Also, implicit in his book is that you're already good at technical analysis and can make market calls with accuracy better than chance. So, you need an overall working strategy before you enlist the specialized options tactics he presents.

In the end, this book's value comes in telling you what really works for options, but not in sufficient detail that you can make a living at it. So start out small, and check out sites like elitetrader where people with experience can share things like exits and position sizing for spreads and other options positions in greater depth.

Good, practical material

I'd give this book 5 stars for its practicality, but there are a few flaws. Many options books present a Chinese menu of exotic strategies, confusing the reader and probably causing him to lose his money quickly. This book distills all of these strategies down to 4 of the ones that are the most practical for investors and traders, and that in my experience work well in real life. I was put off by the awful title, which is not the main point of the material in the book at all, but I guess the publisher wants to attract some of the get-rich-quick crowd. The clarity and emphasis are uneven. The fifth "bonus strategy" would've best been left out, because most traders would consider it extremely dangerous. On balance, the book's emphasis on profiting from option time decay by using stragegies that are safer than stock ownership greatly outweighs these flaws. You can waste thousands of dollars on options classes and end up with less useful material than is contained in this book.

Excellent profitable strategies for intermediate option traders

This book is not a good first book for people wanting to start trading options for the first time. However it is excellent for those that have already read a few books on options and understand the basic principles of how they work.
This book explains the importance of not thinking of only buying calls and puts, but also the danger of wasting your money on deep out of the money options that have no intrinsic value and do not even move in your favor even when you are right about the stock. He also explains briefly how delta works with option price movement as it correlates to the stock, a .50 delta means the stock moves half a much as the stock, a 1.00 delta means the options move completely with the underlying stock. The Theta is also covered which is a measurement of how fast the option value deteriorates in relation to time. I found two of the web sites the author suggested to be great for option information. One has an option calculator where you simply key in the option information and it gives you the options value along with the Greeks. Another shows you the probability of an option reaching your target price before it expires.
The book basically gives you four strategies that tilt the odds in your favor for winning with options while at the same time controlling risk.

#1 Deep-In-The-The-Money call strategy: If you want to use options to participate in the up trend of a stock then buy deep in the money calls that move equally with the underlying stock so you can profit along with the stock holders. You want a delta of at least .90. These options only cost about 50% of what the stock costs and you get 90% of the movement, that is a great deal! Stay away from deep out of the money calls they are like lottery tickets with little chance of being worth anything at expiration. This advice alone is worth the price of the book.

#2. Sell Puts: Instead of putting in limit-buy orders for stock you want to buy sell Naked Puts on hot stocks you want to buy when they pull back. Support or 50 day moving averages are a food target price to use to sell your Puts. Only do this on up trending stocks that you want to own.

#3 Option Credit Spread: This strategy has a limited risk and limited return feature. It takes advantage of the time decay factor. It entails the buying and selling of the same amount of options as a single transaction for a single price at the same time. They are done at different strike prices and are either both call or both put options. You will be selling the more expensive of the two options, which will yield cash credit to your account. Then you will buy the less expensive one. Your profit is the difference you made on the one you sold versus the less expensive one you bought.

#4 Covered Call: Put stocks that you plan on holding long term to work by selling covered calls on them. Sell your calls out of the money and at prices you would be happy to sell the stock for. Sell the calls above price resistance to avoid it being called. This creates a nice income stream.

"Don't be under the impression that picking a market direction and being right on it is the only way to profit." Options gives us many, many ways to make money. With only 12% of options being assigned and used, if you sell instead of buy you should average 88% wins. I highly recommend this book for option traders ready to go the the next level beyond simply being buyers of options and puts to sellers of options and profiting from theta. Be the casino not the gambler.

Narrowly focused on sales, little about true competition

The book claims to be about dealing with competition but in fact is focused on one concept: the Unique Value Promise (UVP) which is "the power of why" plain and simple. The book delivered none of these for me.

It was not unique and rehashed the basics most kids selling magazines door to door. Differentiate to stand out. Does anyone need to be told that? That's really the entire focus of the book.

The book provided little value. By the time I reached the end of the book I was still waiting for practical advice instead of self-aggrandizing by the author and constant references to proprietary and undisclosed tools such as surveys and interviews. The book set the stage to go to the author's website to buy additional products or services. Paying for a book that only gives you the tip of the iceberg is of no value to me.

Most important is that the book doesn't deliver on it's promise. This doesn't cover dealing with your competition, but rather deals with finding out why your customers buy your product suggesting taking at least 100 clients out to dinner or coffee for extensive interviews. If you have a large work force and have clients and staff that have time for it, great. The concept is unrealistic for small business owners. No research the competition, no learning how to zig when they zag and fails to recognize the fact that if your competition can commoditize your UVP rendering it moot.

Instead of a progressive forward thinking strategy of the marketplace, this felt more like a time-share seminar from the 1950s and I didn't get a free TV after putting up with it for several hours.

Why you must keep asking "Why?" until you understand why

In his book Begin with Why, Simon Sinek asserts -- and I agree -- that individuals as well as organizations must have a crystal clear sense of purpose or it will be very difficult (if not impossible) for them to decide what to do and how to do it. If they have the right purpose, it will guide and inform their decisions and, meanwhile, inspire and then sustain their efforts. Sinek suggests that the Golden Circle [i.e. beginning with WHY at the center, then proceeding to determine HOW to produce WHAT] "helps us to understand why we do what we do. [It] provides compelling evidence of how much more we can achieve if we remind ourselves to start everything we do by asking why."

Richard Weylman fully agrees. In fact, he wrote this book to help business leaders to answer the most important "why" questions and solve the most serious problems so that they and their companies can break out in a competitive marketplace. "That's our goal here: to elevate your business performance and presence so that you are the best and only choice for your product and services -- regardless of your geographic footprint or your vertical or target markets."

Early on, Weylman poses three important questions for his reader to consider:

1. "Why are your customers buying from you right now?"
2. "Are your customers staying with you or shopping around, and if the latter, why?"
3. "What is it about your competition's relationship to their customers that you haven't figured out yet? Why are they so successful?"

Having obtained preliminary answers, the reader can then take full advantage of the wealth of information, insights, and counsel that Weylman provides to help her or his organization become much more customer-centric. Only then, with a much better understanding of customer perceptions and expectations, can the organization complete the difficult process of breaking out in its marketplace, differentiating itself with a competitive advantage whose nature and extent will be determined by the nature and extent of its customer centricity.

Breakthrough initiatives require results-driven leadership. "Now let's plunge into nitty-gritty, the best practices I've developed from years of consultation and experience in the field, what I call the rules of engagement for having your customers define your Unique Value Promise. There are eight "rules" and Weylman discusses each in an extended passage, Pages 42-53. They are best revealed within the narrative, in context. I also presume to suggest that you consider what Fred Reichheld characterizes as "the ultimate question," one that can be asked of all customers to determine your organization's Net Promoter Score (NPS). I was prepared to hate this book. Reading the Foreword I made a judgment...here was another thinly disguised extended sales pitch written by a consultant. Shameless self-promotion.

Instead, C. Richard Weylman has delivered a must have how-to to transform your business. Written by a practitioner who more than rolls up his sleeves and gets his hands dirty, THE POWER OF WHY is the type of playbook that offers a profound distinction in how to change your company and reinforce a culture of promise. And Weylman won't waste your time; this is a 150-page book that delivers the equivalent of volumes of sound and practical business advice.

Most business people are familiar with the Unique Selling Proposition, USP. Some of us have spent hours, days, maybe weeks around the conference table creating and refining our USP and then crafting the delivery of that message to clients who may, at the end, respond with a yawn. Weylman offers a customer-centric viewpoint, the UVP, or Unique Value Promise. "It's the customer perspective that matters."

And then Weylman hands you the complete playbook on not only how to build your UVP, but also then how to integrate it into the culture of promise and finally, how to blend it all into your sales and marketing. He brooks no deviation from the plan. He suggests that client-facing members of the business meet with the best clients and go through an eighteen-question interview. No technology, just a good old-fashioned discussion. No emails, no voice recorders, no paper interviews. Face-to-face. It is only through this type of interaction that a business can discover functional advantages and emotional results.

Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? What are we living for? Why are we living? Unquestionably, the wretched "intellectual animal,” mistakenly called a human being, not only ignores, but furthermore ignores that he ignores. The worst of it is the strange and difficult situation in which we find ourselves; we ignore the secret of all our tragedies, yet we are convinced that we know it all. Just send a "rational mammal” to the middle of the Sahara desert, one of those who claims to be influential in life; leave him there, far away from any oasis, and observe from an airplane what occurs. Facts will speak for themselves: the "intellectual humanoid,” though he boasts that he is powerful and believes he is a real human being, turns out to be frightfully weak. The "rational animal” is one hundred percent stupid; he thinks the best of himself. He thinks he can develop his potential via kindergarten, good manners, elementary and secondary schools, diplomas, universities, the prestige of daddy, etc. Unfortunately, in spite of so much education, good manners, titles, and money, we know very well that any stomachache saddens us, and that deep down we continue being unhappy and miserable. It is enough to read universal history to find out that we are still the same barbarians of the past, and instead of improving, we have become worse. This present century with its magnificence, wars, prostitution, world-wide sodomy, sexual degeneration, drugs, alcohol, exorbitant cruelty, extreme perversion, monstrosity, etc., is the mirror in which we must see ourselves; there is not a good enough reason to boast of having reached a superior stage of development. To think that time means progress is absurd; unfortunately, the "learned ignoramuses” continue to be bottled up in the "dogma of evolution...” In all the somber pages of "dark history” we find the same atrocious cruelties, ambitions, wars, etc. Nevertheless, our "super-civilized” contemporaries are still convinced that what we hear about war is secondary, a fleeting accident that has nothing to do with their so boasted "modern civilization.” Indeed, what is important is the way of being of each person. Some subjects will be drunkards; others will be abstemious, some honest and others shameless; there is everything in life. The populace is the sum of all individuals. The populace is what the individual is; it is the government, etc. ... The populace, then, is the extension of the individual...

The Power to Transfrom our Psychology

Within each one of us is a psychological conditioning. It is this psychological conditioning that determines everything about our life. All of the circumstances in our lives, our job, our friends, our quality of relationships, our successes, our failures, our conflicts etc are a reflection of what is inside of us, psychologically.

If we can change what we are within, if we can change our own psychological conditioning we can change everything.

That transformation comes in stages. The beginning of this transformation is dealt with in "Revolutionary Psychology".

This book deals with a long and arduous but profoundly beautiful psychological revolution within oneself.

This book revolutionary psychology explains our psychological constitution from an esoteric perspective. It deals with why we suffer, the causes of suffering and mechanicity and mostly importantly and most the way to break free out of the bondage of our own conditioning.

True spirituality is about transforming negative egotistical states into states that are cognizant, compassionate and truly happy and content. The important thing to undertsnad that our mind is conditioned but it can be completely and radically transformed into something new, something better, something spiritual.

Fire your therapist!...and be your own.

I was going through a rough time and was seeing a therapist that would charge me $90.00 a visit. After I started reading this book my therapist fired me. It was a good firing, she said I didn't need her anymore and that it was obvious that I had the psychological tools now. I owe it all to this book and I thank Samael, in this book of Revolutionary Psychology! Samael takes a no-hold-barred kind of straightforwardness that is kind of harsh for most. I'm glad he does though, because this straight forward approach is definitely what I needed to make the positive correction in my life. Most books that deal with "self help" tend to pat you on the back and tell you what a swell person you are, I guess I needed something a bit more honest, to tell me how I really was. Samael specifically writes against the intellect of his readers, which means you have to read with your heart. People are used to "modern education" feeding them clear cut outlined and numbered tables to memorize and follow; for them, this book wont be so easy to comprehend. This book changed my life, it helped me to see myself in ways I unfortunately hadn't before. It helped me to see and correct my defects so that I would lessen the harm and suffering caused to myself and others. Right book at the right time. If you want to deepen your understanding on topics like self observation, mindfulness, meditation, and the True Self, then this book should not be skipped.

What a masterful writing, simple and poignant.

I have been blessed enough to stumble upon the teachings of Master Samael Aun Weor. This book provides the basic techniques of confronting one's ego without providing so much in the way of esoteric knowledge that one becomes overwhelmed. I am genuinely more at ease and much better equipped to deal with the multiplicity within myself after reading this book. It is truly inspiring.

About the Author

Darryl Benjamin is a passionate educator and advocate for sustainable food systems. He holds a Leadership for Sustainable Food Systems Professional Certificate from the University of Vermont, an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and a BA in English Literature from McGill University. Benjamin is cofounder and president of The GMO Breakthrough Education Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to transforming global food systems through education. Benjamin has taught at over a dozen universities and colleges in Massachusetts and Vermont, including six years in food sustainability, writing, and marketing at New England Culinary Institute. He currently lectures and conducts seminars on sustainable food systems, GMOs, and farm-to-table principles.

Chef Lyndon Virkler is dean of faculty at New England Culinary Institute. He holds a Master’s Degree in Adult and Higher Education from Vermont College of Union Institute and University, a BA in American Literature from Middlebury College, and an Associates of Occupational Science from The Culinary Institute of America. Since joining New England Culinary Institute in 1988, Chef Virkler has been active in a number of issues related to food and agriculture. He is a founding member of the Vermont Fresh Network and the Vermont chapter of Chefs Collaborative. He currently serves as co-chair of the food education committee of the Central Vermont Food Systems Council, an organization focused on developing a sustainable food system within Washington County. He is an avid skier, home gardener, and composter and has been involved in incorporating the sustainable food systems component into New England Culinary Institute’s curriculum. He has also worked on a number of recipe development projects for food companies including Bruegger’s Bagels, Cabot Cheese, and the Vermont Apple Grower’s Association. Lyndon lives in Waitsfield, Vermont with his wife, Joanne, and has two daughters and two grandchildren.

About the Author
Nick Baker has been involved in the great sport of competitive swimming since 1961. He swam competitively for eleven years, coached club for twenty-one years, and has coached swim camps exclusively for the past eighteen years. He started his coaching career in Canada in 1972, then moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1993 to operate a swim camp there. In 1995 Nick published 101 Winning Ways, a motivational book for competitive swimmers. The material for the book came from observing the winning ways of successful swimmers he coached. Nick cofounded the original Peak Performance Swim Camp in 1996. In 2005 he branched out on his own and founded the present-day version. Since then Nick has traveled throughout the United States and abroad, conducting his holistic camps and clinics. Past international locations include: Antigua, Aruba, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, China, Curacao, England, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, and Venezuela. Past US locations include: Alabama, Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Peak Performance Swim Camp currently offers more than two dozen swim camps and clinics annually including clinics for triathletes and master swimmers. More than 800 swimmers from over 30 countries participated in 2011. Private coaching as well as start, stroke, and turn video analysis are also available throughout the year. In 2007 Nick formed a dynamic partnership with US Sports/ Nike Camps, America’s largest sports camp network and official operator of Nike Sports Camps worldwide. Over the past thirty-nine years Nick has coached swimmers of all ages and abilities, including Olympic finalists, Olympic trial qualifiers, NCAA champions, senior national champions, junior national champions, state champions, national qualifiers, junior national qualifiers, zone champions, and junior Olympic champions. In 1992 one of Nick’s former swimmers, Lisa Flood, qualified for the 1992 Canadian Olympic team in the 100 BR, placing fourteenth overall. Nick attended the Olympics with Lisa as her personal coach. Nick has been a featured writer in Swimming World magazine and presented at numerous coaching clinics throughout the world. He also acts as a consultant to various swim teams including the Greenwich YMCA in Greenwich, Connecticut.
