This edition is an excellent review of Terrorim. It provides the history on how terrorism was used in the past and an excellent anology of the current events. I am using the book for undergrad students at the university and highly recommend it.

Excellent Tutorial and Reference

I find this book to be a very good introduction to Inkscape. The tutorials are well chosen and serve to illustrate a wide range of the functionality available. Bah clearly knows his subject. He introduces some clever techniques that probably would not occur to the typical user (like myself).

I have the Kindle version of the book. By having the book on Kindle for the PC I was able to see color versions of the photos. What really worked well was being able to have the tutorials open side by side with Inkscape on the screen. This allowed me to easilly read the tutorial while I worked.

The book is well organized and seems to provide a level of detail that will enable most users to master the program. There were a couple of spots where I would have liked to see a bit more detail, but all in all I thought the book was very good.

Needs improvement

A good reference, but the online version is actually more usable. The examples cannot be followed, practically-speaking, without resorting to the online version. (Note: I am using the Kindle version of the book, not the printed version which may be different). It would be even better if the thing were converted to a pay video series so a person can actually see what is being done, as there are far too many buzzwords for the average person to follow it.
Inkscape itself is a pretty good program. I did have it go completely haywire as I was finishing up a project, and lost all my work, so it's not without bugs. (In this case, the ruler at the top and sides went to very large numbers with scientific notation (!), and the work was all gone - no page section was present anymore. :(
But it's free, so what do you expect?

Older edition than printed copy

Book is OK, software is great option to the other well know product. Inkscape is great for university assignments, where you need to make something stand out as different. Two main disappointments with kindle version though:
1) Kindle version one edition behind the printed copy, doesn't have all the new features
2) as others stated, does not give full instructions on how to do task (assumes you are reading from front to back and recall what you learnt in earlier tasks). Annoying if you search for a topic, continually have to go backwards to find all the instructions.
Overall, OK for getting up to speed but needs updating.

James Turnbull is the author of five technical books about open source software and a longtime member of the open source community. James authored the first and second books about Puppet, and works for Puppet Labs, running client services. James speaks regularly at conferences including OSCON, Linux.conf.au, FOSDEM, OpenSourceBridge, DevOpsDays and a number of others. He is a past president of Linux Australia, has run Linux.conf.au and serves on the program committee of Linux.conf.au and OSCON. James is Australian but currently lives in Portland, Oregon. mixed bag of choices, "pro" - maybe ? maybe not.. you decide

I always liked "Apress" books and keep purchasing them side by side with O'Reilly titles. Most "Apress" books and authors give very "in the trenches" and "gotcha" oriented approach, while O'Reilly seems very dry . Well, here we have 1053 page volume that is trying to cover most issues and applications that any Linux sysadmin will come across. Plenty of advise, plenty of "do that", "do not do this" options. However, I gave it only 3 (three) stars - here is why:

1) A lot of "entry level" stuff that takes at least 15%-20% of the book. You just do not call the book "Pro" and show "grep localhost /etc/*" on page 97. All previous pages are written about history of Linux, why you need a Linux server, blah-blah - that can be easily skipped. Just randomly opened a page .. page 358 - how to use "df -h" command and what it does. What a revelation! IMHO, a book called "pro" need to spend a lot of time dealing with nitty -gritty stuff - like building HA systems, integration of Spamassassin+postfix+clamav, integration of SVN+Wiki+Bugzilla+Apache - we have built a similar system here, but I would love to read more from authors who know how to architect a scalable solution for 200+ servers. That would be "Pro"

2) The second drawback is very selective choice of applications at hand. I know that Puppet, for example, is an excellent package and has plenty of features - but would you mention at least Cfengine that been long enough and has a huge installation base?! Give a half of page explaining pros/cons Cfengine vs Puppet - and explain your choice for Puppet (Chapter 19) - yet give people an option to explore Cfengine. Or Chapter 10 gives a verdict to Postfix - "postfix is much easier to understand, configure and troubleshoot" - so no reference to Sendmail!!! OK, I agree with you - but can you give a half-page reference list to Sendmail choices?

Contains Linux system administration advice and recipes.

I have found this book useful, being a Windows admin who doesn't drop into a Linux terminal session very often. The book contains the usual man pages, "history of Linux", etc. The real reason to purchase it is the included advice and recipes. Every chapter that I have read has a real "I've done this many times" feeling to it. I have yet to find a technical mistake in the information that I have gotten from this book (I can't say that about most websites).

This book is not a complete reference to the most popular utilities or the newest distributions. It falls short of a complete Linux reference due to the fact that the authors seem to only discuss tools that they have personal experience with. This book also won't teach you how to become a top-notch Linux System Administrator. What it will do, is quickly point a non-Linux system administrator in a possible direction when they need to make configuration changes. I have also found that this no-batteries-or-Internet-required reference comes in handy when working on Linux machines in remote locations.

A Windows or Mac system admin may find this book a welcome addition to their technical library. A Linux system admin may want to look elsewhere.

Broadest & Most Up-To Date View of Embedded Linux Development

This excellent Developer's Guide to Embedded Linux Systems Development has several features to recommend it, among the sparse other choices for this important topic. It is extremely up to date, takes a broad and pedagogically sound view of the Embedded Linux Environment and takes the extra step to advise on choice of a board and development environment (how to make the choice, a piece of information that won't easily go stale) and in describing the entire Embedded Systems Development Process. It describes hot to select a board and the accompanying development environment, what to do when you get your board and how to make it boot, how to develop a Customized (to your development style and application/hardware environment) Linux Environment (Development Version and Deliverable to the Consumer), how to debug applications,the nature of hard and soft Real-Time requirements, system tuning, and how to handle field updates to the software. A vitally important chapter that should be included in every Embedded Systems development book (not just Linux), but that as far as I know is included in no other book, Chapter 17 on Deploying Applications talks about all of the issues in creating an "Embedded First-Class Final Product". The issues discussed in this vital section include not only a final hardware and software deliverable, but "Systems Integration" with issues of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing design as well as the expected (by Software Professionals) issues of Deployable Boot Loaders and File Systems.

This excellent and friendly guide to building Embedded Linux Architectures will be valuable not only to EE's and Software Professionals but the growing ranks of hobbyist and professionals in other domains who are experimenting and deploying applications with the extremely popular and recently released Beagleboard, Bug Labs and Gumstix Embedded Linux Systems.

The Civil War never interested me much

At least that was true until I read Michael Shaara's "Killer Angels." Now I'm a goner. I have bought five more books on the Civil War including McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom," a huge tome that promises to fill me in on the whole historical context, time, place, politics, all of it. All this happened because I was interested in a single book. This is Michael Shaara's fault.
It is of no consequence that the prospective reader may not have the slightest interest in war, the Civil War in particular, guns, Gettysburg, generals, muskets, artillery, smoke, fire, or death. All the reader need be interested in is a good book that is a pleasure, an enlightening experience, to read. If you like reading, if you enjoy books that captivate, that keep you turning pages, that won't let you sleep, then buy this book.
Let me note here that the author indulges in several literary devices that might pain the true Civil War buff. He uses interior monologues which are, of course, pure fiction (though based on written material of the time). He also centers his story on two major fights that took place at Gettysburg: the battle of Little Roundtop, and Pickett's Charge, even though quite a lot of other great moments occurred there. Both these battles are told well, and the characters of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain - the commander of the 20th Maine who held Little Round Top against attacking Confederates to the "last bullet," and James Longstreet, commander of the I Corps of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia who had serious differences with his superior over the tactics used at Gettysburg, are explored at depth.
By necessity, Shaara could not tell, in a single novel (for that is what this book is), all that happened those three fateful days. For those who want to know more I refer you to Shelby Foote's "Stars In Their Courses."
I aim this review at those who are unsure of whether a Civil War novel is what they want to read. Be assured you will not be disappointed. This is a truly fine book, especially for the uninitiated, as I was. I recommend this book to all without hesitation.

Any praise of this book is an understatement.

This fine example of what historical fiction should be, which I first picked up to read as an eighth grader, was the gateway into my now militant obsession with the Civil War and my idolization of Gen. Joshua Chamberlain. The well-deserved rave reviews that litter the front and back covers drew me to it, but Shaara's powerful writing style and stunningly human characters drew me INTO it. Not surprisingly I worship the film Gettysburg and have accumulated a large collection of Civil War and Chamberlain-related literature, though some have suggested this is slightly abnormal for a fifteen year old. While reading The Killer Angels one must wonder at Shaara's amazing ability to portray the major players of the battle, whose real personalities must have since been lost over a century of historian analyzation, as real people. I absolutely love this book and jealously guard my much-used copy. To enjoy it you don't have to be a Civil War buff or even know anything about the battle, you only have to be prepared to appreciate what is epic and human in the midst of this otherwise horrifying war.

As good as it gets...

Most times, I would much prefer to read a work of nonfiction as opposed to historical fiction. But after reading dozens of books about the Battle of Gettysburg, it was refreshing to read Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning Killer Angels. This fictional account gives us a viewpoint not to be found in nonfiction works.

What makes Killer Angels different is that each chapter is written through the eyes of the various leaders from both the Union and the Confederacy including Buford, Longstreet, Lee, Chamberlain, Armistead, as well as an English observer, Fremantle. Shaara used diaries, journals, letters and memoirs to recreate not only what was happening on the battlefield, but also, what these men were thinking, seeing and feeling. It's as if you're an eyewitness to history. Killer Angels does not attempt to cover every minute of the Battle of Gettysburg. In fact, Shaara focuses on four main aspects: Buford's establishing Union lines on good ground before the battle, Longstreet's ambivalence about fighting at Gettysburg, Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine defending Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge.

I found myself especially haunted by James Longstreet. Once a carefree, amiable man, he's still reeling from the recent deaths of 3 of his 4 children in one week. Robert E. Lee's number two man, he knows that a frontal attack (Pickett's charge) will be disastrous. He is tortured that Lee won't listen to his advice, and inconsolable after so many men are killed. "Along with all the horror of loss, and the weariness, and all the sick helpless rage, there was coming now a monstrous disgust. He was through. They had all died for nothing and he sent them...The army would not recover from this day."

I also gained an appreciation for Joshua Chamberlain. Chamberlain was not a trained soldier, but a college professor. But he was definitely a born leader. He started the Civil War as a lieutenant colonel and finished as a brigadier general. His heroics in leading his men on Little Round Top is a thing of legend, probably saved the Union and earned him a Medal of Honor.

I have found that once Gettysburg has gotten under your skin, you'll never tire of reading about this important battle that changed the course of the war. For fictional accounts, Killer Angels is about as good as it gets.
