Gr 9 Up—Continuing from where The Devil's Intern (Holiday House, 2015) left off, in this sequel, Hell has returned to normal and readers will find Medusa Pallister applying to work for Septimus, the biggest boss of the underworld, alongside Mitchell Johnson. Her goal is to figure out why she saw Mitchell and his friends outside her house before she died only to find that he doesn't have any answers either. This becomes the least of her worries when the Devil's dreamcatcher is stolen by an Unspeakable, Rory Hunter, and Hell is on lockdown. On a mission to recapture the dreamcatcher, the team is reunited and take part on an adventure outside of Hell. Using the viscometer, they are challenged by the Unspeakable as well as unruly angels. Skinwalkers and other new characters are the least of their problems. Hosie contintues to sensitively incorporate beliefs from a variety of cultures in her humorous exploration of the afterlife. With lots of adventure and a clever twist, this book will be another favorite among readers. VERDICT Fans of the previous volume will not be disappointed with this zany follow-up.—Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI

Review
Praise for THE DEVIL'S INTERN:

* "A comic, time-traveling trip to Hell and back. . . . Just outstanding fun for those who enjoy snarky comedy and suspense."--Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

* "Interesting characters, nonstop adventure, and humor with a touch of heart will not disappoint teens looking for a dark comedy."--School Library Journal, Starred Review

"In a tale that swings from dead funny to dead serious . . . Hosie incorporates uncommonly savvy thinking about the paradoxes and logical consequences of changing the past." --Booklist

This sequel to The Devil's Intern (2014) sends the familiar characters plus one on a new and crucial mission. The snarky humor that made the first book a standout is still on display as Mitchell continues his internship in Hell's accounting office, joined by a new assistant, narrator Medusa. Alfarin, a Viking prince, and Elinor, who died in the Great Fire of London, round out the posse. It seems that someone has stolen a Dreamcatcher used by The Devil to keep his horrifying dreams from destroying the world. It also seems that the thief is Medusa's stepfather, an abusive monster who has escaped from the worst pit of Hell. Tasked with catching him, Medusa and her friends team up with a group of angels, including Joan of Arc, who pursue the same prey. The two teams have some difficulty getting along, but when they learn just how high the stakes really are, they find ways to work together. Sadly for them but happily for the book, the forces of evil literally seem always to be one step ahead. Hosie spools out her marvelous dark humor, making the first half of the book an utter joy to read, although the plot demands more focus on action later. Readers may well wonder why these eminently likable characters have been consigned to Hell, but apparently in some cases it is merely a bureaucratic error. More splendidly hellish fun. (Paranormal suspense. 12-18) --Kirkus Reviews

A very awesome book cover
By Tony Parsons
Olivia Pallister (16, suicide, Team DEVIL, aka Medusa Pallister) interviews for an accounting intern.
Her boss is Lord Septimus (Devils head accountant, former Roman General).
Mitchell Johnson (Team DEVIL intern) also works for him.

What will happen between Medusa Pallister & Mitchell Johnson?
What is the dreamcatcher?

What is it between Team Devil & Team Angel?

Warning: This book is for adults only & contains extreme violent or graphic adult content or profanity &/or sexually explicit scenarios. It may be offensive to some readers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written paranormal book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great paranormal movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. Not my normal read but I liked it. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free Goodreads; holiday house; ARC; paperback book

Lee (a preeminent lecturer, consultant, and author in social marketing) and Philip Kotler (an influential individual in the field who coined the term “social marketing” in 1971 with Gerald Zaltman) demonstrate how traditional marketing principles and techniques are successfully applied to campaigns and efforts to improve health, decrease injuries, protect the environment, build communities and enhance financial well-being. The Fifth Edition contains more than 26 new cases highlighting the 10 step planning model, and a new chapter describing major theories, models and frameworks that inform social marketing strategies and inspire social marketers.

Review
“It is one of the best books out there, so have continued to use it. Students generally like it. . . .This is the state of the art text.” (W. Douglas Evans)

“The strength of the book is in the examples (including boxes), especially the different lengths so that you can kind of choose yourself how much to use and how deep to go into a particular illustration.” (G. Scott Erickson)

“I like the mix of topics in the book, and I like the chapter dedicated to each step of the marketing process.”    (Jennifer Cross)

“I like the text because it ties to concepts the students have learning in Principles of Marketing, but also distinguishes how social marketing is different than traditional marketing.  The vignettes provide good examples, and the chapters are not too long or complex.” (Nicole Vowles)

Baptist Theology: A Four-Century Study (Baptist Series), by James Leo Garrett Jr.

In this book the fullness of the Baptist experience in Christian higher education is explored, charted, and analyzed. Beginning with the establishment in 1756 of the Academy and reaching to the present the author explores the need for Baptists to pursue education and the types of schools they founded. Included are colleges, universities, manual labor schools, literary and theological institutions, theological schools, and bible colleges. Special attention is given to women and higher education and the Black Baptist achievements. Details are provided about what makes a Baptist school Baptist: charters, trustees, presidents, support, church accountability. Chapters at the end of the typological and chronological narratives ponder the meaning of denominational education at present, with suggestions about the future of faith-based institutions and the failure of contemporary literature to attend properly to Baptist idiosyncrasies.

Baptist Historical Theology at its Best
By Christophe M. Sheffield
Baptist Theology by James Garrett is one of the most comprehensive studies of Baptist historical theology ever written. Dr. Garrett puts half a century of academic theological experience to use by meticulously documenting the development of Baptist theology through the four centuries following their emergence in England and Continental Europe to the present day. He also addresses many misconceptions about Baptist origins. For instance the common misconception that Baptists came directly from the Anabaptist movement. He also documents and challenges Landmarkism's erroneous view of Baptist history. This is an essential work for anyone desiring to understand Baptist theology and its development through the centuries. Most Baptists assume that we materialized out of nothing in the 1950s. This lack of hindsight has in recent decades led Baptists to embrace bad theology and practices and to shun things historically maintained by Baptists. Dr. Garrett's book is a welcomed resource for those seeking to correct these trends.

This is a heavy volume with 726 pages. However, for all those pages, there are only 13 chapters. They are as follows:

Ch. 1 - The Roots of Baptist Beliefs
Ch. 2 - English General Baptists
Ch. 3 - English Particular Baptists
Ch. 4 - Early American Baptists
Ch. 5 - Awakening and Missionary Baptists
Ch. 6 - Baptist Landmarkism
Ch. 7 - Baptists in Controversy
Ch. 8 - Biblical Theologians
Ch. 9 - Twentieth Century Southern Baptists
Ch. 10 - Recovering Evangelicalism and Reassessing the Baptist Heritage
Ch. 11 - Incursions into Baptist Theology
Ch. 12 - Missions, Ecumenism, and Globalization
Ch. 13 - New Voices in Baptist Theology

I enjoyed reading this book but could not see much about the Independent Baptist movement. It did have alot of interesting insights and you could trace the overall development of theological thought. I would recommend this book to anyone really interested in knowing the truth and not myth of the christians called "Baptists"

Cities and People: How Cities Shape Lives

Human beings and cities are inextricably intertwined. Human beings make cities, and they live and work in them. Although the pace at which cities grow and change may sometimes be so slow as to avoid detection, and while the scales of urban places may confound any sense of human efficacy, we must bear in mind that these are objects of our own making. Not only do human beings shape the physical structures of cities but they also decide what those structures will mean and, as a result, suggest how other human beings will use them. We offer these insights to stir your curiosities, and as a source of empowerment. Whatever is built by human hands is, by definition, within our power to change. Indeed, throughout the book we offer examples of individuals and groups who are working to change cities in ways that in turn improve the lives of residents.

This brings us to perhaps the most important point of the book: places, whether cities, neighborhoods, or even smaller units therein, have the power to shape human lives. The structures of inequalities found within and across societies are quite literally made concrete in cities. Add to these a host of place-specific threats stemming from political and environmental instability, and we can trace many of the factors that diminish individuals’ lives to the places where they live. Places are not the only culprit here – in many instances, places are the sites where problems stemming from larger structures manifest themselves – but understanding places allows us to understand the ways in which these forces intersect with specific populations and resources.

We hope that this excerpt leaves you with a sense of why cities are compelling topics of study. Some of you likely needed little convincing: you may have had questions about why cities take the forms they do, how immigrants create communities in a new place, or why some neighborhoods are luxurious and opulent while others are sites of danger and despair. We encourage those of you who have come to this field accidentally or even reluctantly to consider cities as sites where you can readily see social processes at work, whether the construction of meanings and memories as they become attached to places or the unequal distribution of economic opportunities. Whatever path you have taken in becoming a student of cities, we hope that this book, and the concepts of space and place at its core, will help you to recognize and understand the ways that humans experience an urban world.

Review

"In a comprehensible style and with illustrating examples, Introduction to Cities offers a fresh perspective to investigate abstract cities through specific places... Given the scope of this book as a sociological volume, it is exceptionally clear and informative on demographic dynamics within urban settings. Students and scholars interested in urban change, human wellbeing and social justice issues will benefit from reading this book."  (Urban Studies, September 2014)

“In this context, the task of writing a broad introductory textbook is daunting, and the authors of Introduction  to Cities should be recognised for their notable accomplishment.”  (Tijdschrift Voor Economische En Sociale Geografie, 1 November 2013)

“In sum, I recommend this book for academic use in lower level undergraduate courses in urban studies and related disciplines. To conclude, the full title of Introduction to Cities can and should be taken quite literally; this is an introductory text about cities, exploring how place and space shape the human experience. Xiangming Chen, Anthony M. Orum, and Krista E. Paulsen’s book exemplifies truth in advertising.”  (Journal of Urban Affairs, 1 May 2014)

"Introduction to Cities" shows how and why cities are important to us as members of a global human community. Each chapter lays out an accessible, empathetic, and coherent story about cities that will intrigue the reader and excite their curiosity. Through a combination of historical overview, theoretical application, and astute analysis and cross-national case studies of urban change, Introduction to Cities provides an original, innovative perspective to explain how cities change, how they affect our lives, and how we can make them better places to live. Students and scholars of cities and urban change will enjoy this book very much."
—Kevin Fox Gotham, Tulane University

"This comprehensive political sociology of cities reflects both the growing interest in space and place and the unusually rapid urbanization of the developing world, with a particularly sensitive treatment of Chinese cities. Up-to-date, and theoretically and politically astute, the text is exceptionally clear, almost conversational in tone, and oriented to student learning."
—Edward Soja, UCLA

From the Back Cover

Introduction to Cities seeks to explain why cities are such a vital part of the human experience and how they shape our lives.

Written in an engaging and jargon-free style, this book approaches the study of cities through two main concepts: that cities are places, where people live, form communities, and establish their own identities, and that they are spaces, such as residential areas or the suburbs, that offer a way to configure and shape the material and natural environment.

Introduction to Cities covers theory from the historical to the cutting edge, and offers a balanced account of life in cities, highlighting both positive and negative themes. It takes a global approach, with examples ranging from Berlin and Chicago to Shanghai and Mumbai. Students will appreciate the inclusion of additional features such as a glossary of key terms, critical thinking questions, and suggestions for further reading. In addition, the book is extensively illustrated with maps, charts, tables, and over 80 photographs.

Taking in topics such as social inequalities, race, globalization, and sustainability, this book provides a complete introduction to the history, evolution, and future of the modern city.

It is also accompanied by a comprehensive website (www.wiley.com/go/cities), which features further examples and case studies, discussion and essay questions, chapter outlines, and links to useful online resources and films and documentaries.

Secondhand Souls CD: A Novel, by Christopher Moore

In San Francisco, the souls of the dead are mysteriously disappearing—and you know that can’t be good—in New York Times bestselling author Christopher Moore’s delightfully funny sequel to A Dirty Job.

Something really strange is happening in the City by the Bay. People are dying, but their souls are not being collected. Someone—or something—is stealing them and no one knows where they are going, or why, but it has something to do with that big orange bridge. Death Merchant Charlie Asher is just as flummoxed as everyone else. He’s trapped in the body of a fourteen-inch-tall “meat puppet” waiting for his Buddhist nun girlfriend, Audrey, to find him a suitable new body to play host.

To get to the bottom of this abomination, a motley crew of heroes will band together: the seven-foot-tall death merchant Minty Fresh; retired policeman turned bookseller Alphonse Rivera; the Emperor of San Francisco and his dogs, Bummer and Lazarus; and Lily, the former Goth girl. Now if only they can get little Sophie to stop babbling about the coming battle for the very soul of humankind . . .

The Story of the Moors in Spain (1886) [Illustrated], by Stanley Lane-Poole

The story of the Moors in Spain “reads like a dream.” Under their rule, thrift and prosperity prevailed throughout the country.

“Palatial cities rose under their hand. Aqueducts, rivaling those of the Roman Campagna, brought the streams from the mountains to city and field. Great districts, naturally sunburnt and barren, were made by skilful irrigation to blossom into wonderful fertility. Under their rule Spain was a rich, a prosperous, and, to a great degree, a happy land. Ample revenue of their monarchs enabled them to undertake and complete works of regal splendor, of which the admired Alhambra and the Mosque—now the Cathedral—of Cordova, with its thousand pillars of variegated marble, yet remaining after the desolations of centuries, are striking examples. . . . Their universities were of such celebrity that students from all Christian lands eagerly repaired to them. . . . In poetry and elegant literature, they attained no inconsiderable success.”

This book is very skilful and interesting presentation of that brilliant and adventurous tale. The reader will especially value the numerous excellent illustrations and the ample citation of the story of the Cid. The writer's sympathies are wholly, and perhaps deservedly, with the Moors against the Christians, little or no notice being taken of the vices of slavery and of the harem inseparable from Moslem civilization. "The true memorial of the Moors is seen," he says, " in desolate tracts of utter barrenness, where once the Moslem grew luxuriant vines and olives and yellow ears of corn; in a stupid, ignorant population, where once wit and learning nourished; in the general stagnation and degradation of a people which has hopelessly fallen in the scale of nations, and has deserved its humiliation." So, too, the critic may add, has fallen the once brilliant civilization of Morocco, Algiers, and Tunis.

The book furnishes a fine combination of solid knowledge and literary grace.

Lane-Poole writes:
"THE history of Spain offers us a melancholy contrast. Twelve hundred years ago, Tarik the Moor added the land of the Visigoths to the long catalogue of kingdoms subdued by the Moslems. For nearly eight centuries, under her Mohammedan rulers, Spain set to all Europe a shining example of a civilized and enlightened State. Her fertile provinces, rendered doubly prolific by the industry and engineering skill of her conquerors, bore fruit an hundredfold. Cities innumerable sprang up in the rich valleys of the Guadelquivir and the Guadiana, whose names, and names only, still commemorate the vanished glories of their past. Art, literature, and science prospered, as they then prospered nowhere else in Europe. Students flocked from France and Germany and England to drink from the fountain of learning which flowed only in the cities of the Moors. The surgeons and doctors of Andalusia were in the van of science: women were encouraged to devote themselves to serious study, and the lady doctor was not unknown among the people of Cordova. Mathematics, astronomy and botany, history, philosophy and jurisprudence were to be mastered in Spain, and Spain alone. The practical work of the field, the scientific methods of irrigation, the arts of fortification and shipbuilding, the highest and most elaborate products of the loom, the graver and the hammer, the potter's wheel and the mason's trowel, were brought to perfection by the Spanish Moors."

The truth is........
By I-khan
As a reply to the previous article, I am including this follow-up article to clarify the historical roots of the Moors. Although many Moors practice Islam, as a result of the Islam expansion into Africa, the Moors are not Arabian, as they are often identified (also, all Moors are not Muslims, which we will discuss in an upcoming Board). You can click on the title to go to the actual website. It should also be noted that the black Moors were not slaves but took white people as slaves after their expansion into Spain.

Moors and Arabs

When the Romans entered West Africa in 46 B.C., they saw Africans and called them Maures, from the Greek adjective Mauros, meaning dark or black. It is from Mauros and the Latin term Marues that the word Moor is derived. Since the inhabitants of North Africa were black, the Romans and later the Europeans called them Moors. It is no coincidence that the land inhabited by the Moors was called Mauritania and Morocco, meaning "Land of the Blacks."

In the beginning of the seventh century, the Arab prophet, Muhammad, began to preach the word of Islam. Consumed with religious fervor, the Arabs sought to spread Islam and conquer the world. By 708, the Arabs had overrun North Africa. Consequently, Moors in large numbers accepted Arabic as the national language and converted to their conqueror's religion, Islam. Interestingly, hundreds of years later, Africans who had been enslaved by Europeans would again convert to their conqueror's religion, Christianity.

After the fall of the Roman Empire (fifth century), Spain was held by a barbaric white tribe, the Visigoths. Though they were Christians, their brand of Christianity was cruel and unjust. For this reason, Spain's Jews, serfs, and slaves looked favorably upon the arrival of a new civilization in which they would be able to live free of persecution.

Tarik, a great African chief, was given the rank of general in the Arab army and sent to raid Spain. On April 30, 711, Tarik landed on the Spanish Coast with 7,000 troops. His troops consisted of 300 Arabs and 6,700 native Africans (Moors). An ancient source, Ibn Husayn (ca. 950, recorded that these troops were "Sudanese", an Arabic word for Black people.

The Moors were unstoppable, and Visigothic Spain ceased to be. The few resisting Visigoths fled to the caves of the Cantabrian Mountains. Later in the century, the cave dwellers would venture out of the Cantabrian Mountains and reclaim parts of northern Spain.

The Moors of Africa were the real conquerors. When the Arabs arrived, the hardest part of the job had been done. Instead of treating the Moors fairly, the Arab chiefs assigned themselves the most fertile regions. The dissatisfied Moors were not long in coming to blows with the Arabs. (The History of Spain by Louis Bertrand and Sir Charles Petrie - published by Eyre & Spottiswood, London, 1945, page 36). Ultimately, the Moors acquired two-thirds of the peninsula, which they named Al-Andulus.

Al -Andulus was obliged to pay tribute to the Arab Caliph (King) of Damascus. As Al-Andulus acquired its own identity, its bond with the Caliph began to weaken. In 756, Al-Andulus proclaimed itself an independent state. Thus, its only links to the Arabs would be the Islamic faith and the Arabic language.

The Moorish architectural remains in Cordoba, Seville, and Granada prove conclusively that these cities were more prosperous and artistically more brilliant than any Christian cities in Europe at the time. The Moors of Al-Andulus held the torch of leaning and civilization when the rest of Europe was plunged in barbaric ignorance.

If Moorish Spain had been an accomplishment of the Arabs it would have been called Arab or Arabic Spain. Instead it bears the name of its creators, the Moors, i.e., Moorish Spain. Moorish culture was black in origin, bright in Achievement, and powerful in its influence on the rest of Europe.

A Classic Monumental Work. Historically Significant For the Ages.
By Son of the Seven Seas
A debt of gratitude is certainly in order to the eminent historian Stanley Lane Poole for his voluminous literary contribution to Moorish/Islamic culture and history. Lane Poole was a pioneer whose works in his field not only carried the standard of the era, but were nonpariel in his day.

The Story of the Moors in Spain, written roughly a century ago, is of course, a classic work, and its resurrection today to a rife readership, along with Lane Poole's general body of work and other literary contributions from authors addressing Moorish history, coincides with the contemporary movement of conscious Moors to awaken the general masses to an almost obscured and "forgotten," but relevant history.

Lane Poole renders an outstanding educational retelling of the history of the rise and fall of the Moorish Empire's North African annexed rule in Spain, which is ultimately the account of the beginning of the end of a once powerful people and their empire. I am most pleased and impressed that the book hedges not to identify the Moors in subject, as an African phenotype, although some will insist otherwise. There is much included here for conscious readers to be thankful for; but then there is perhaps much omitted. We must consider that recording the truth about African civilizations and their viable contributions to the world was a daring academic initiative in the 1800's for any author (even before the ascent of anti-Arab prejudice), especially since European academia obsessed with the golden rule of proliferating copious volumes of repugnant canards about Africa in general.

Readers will perhaps shed a tear or two (as I initially did and still do) ingesting Lane Poole's account of the final stand of the Moors; the fall of Granada. From the fierce resistance in the alpajarras, where vivid descriptions of battle read like Tolkien; to the gallant charge and final battle of Musa, who deserves much more ink in any historian's account of this time period; to the disgrace of King Boabdil as he relinquishes the throne he hastened to obtain through viciously selfish motives, and foolishly squandered through cowardice and ignorance; and finally, to the sad exile of the Moors, "You may weep like a woman for what you could not defend as a man."

So, this work certainly earns its place in the firmament of Moorish history literature (a sky which, unfortunately, doesn't necessarily teem with stars), and students of history will find it a great read and perfect Moorish History consultation. It is a monumental work for the ages, beautiful in that while holding a firm position on the tapestry of scholarly and academic merit, Lane Poole writes in a style that even children can comprehend and appreciate. An overall great and wonderful read.

And while it is unlikely that lane Poole could have predicted his work would one day find profound appreciation with a reading constituency that didn't exist as such when he wrote, he must be pleased today, for his contribution extends well beyond his grave.

The best 'popular' history of Muslim Spain
By Gogol
This book initially grew in popularity over a decade ago through Ivan Van Sertimas book on the Moors in which this book was well quoted. Stanley Lane Poole was one of those unique writers who could write an accurate historical book in a style that was easy to read. This book covers the hstory of Andalusia or Muslim Spain from the initial conquest to the downfall of Granada and the expulsion of the Muslims from their homeland.

Its almost comical these days that a book like this would be considered 'politically corretc' Thing is, it was published over a century ago in an age much less tolerant than our own when Britain and the was in conflict with a declining Ottoman Turkey and almost at the peak of European colonialism. Yet still, we could find scholars of this quality.

Highly recomended.

From Publishers Weekly
Readers first encounter Budgie in Budgie the Little Helicopter . He has a broad grin and freckles, wears the brim of his hat turned up and works very hard, but has to have a thorough scrub-down after ferrying lobsters. In his first adventure, as recorded by the Duchess, Budgie volunteers to accompany pretty Pippa the Piper (Piper: a make of aircraft) on her maiden flight. As Pippa loops and swoops through the skies, Budgie keeps an eye on the weather. A thunderstorm hits just when Budgie and Pippa are off to rescue a kidnapped girl. They follow the kidnappers' car, and Budgie manages to land nearby and save her, while Pippa goes for help. These bold tactics result in the arrest of the villains, but Budgie, though feted as a hero, has to have another scrub. After another dashing rescue, in Budgie at Bendick's Point (this time over the sea), the modest young whirlybird gets to lead the flypast at the airshow in recognition of his heroism. These jolly stories, ideal for reading aloud, have the perfect complement in Richardson's colorful, bouncy pictures. There's plenty of cheery, almost nostalgic appeal in these anthropomorphized aircraft whose hearts are in the right places. Ages 3-6.

Budgie is enlightening
By Kimberly A. Corners
Budgie: The Little Helicopter is wonderfully illustrated and catches the child's eye with all it's bright colors. The story is intriguing and my two children, 5 & 6 at the time (now 7 & 8) were totally absorbed by it. My son slept with the book for weeks.

Kidnapping theme?
By KG
We bought this book because my son is in love with helicopters, and he likes it.. for the helicopters. I don't like the kidnapping them. Basing a book for young children around it is distasteful. There is some strange innuendo between Budgie and Pippa. There seems to be something a little off or weird about the Budgie stories I can't quite put my finger on. I just know that I really do not enjoy reading them to my son.
