A simple approach to facing your fears and learning to live

I"m not a huge reader of self-help books. I find most of them either obvious or sort of condescending. Like "just do these simple things to feel better."

But somehow this book is different. It feels like a normal person just talking to you and pointing out stuff you have kind of been aware of but have never really focused on before.

I think this book has the potential to help a lot of people!

7 Cups for the Searching Soul is an easy yet very informative and eye-opening read. Some of the information consisted of ideas that had never been explained to me by counselors or doctors. Reasons for your emotions and feelings were outlined as well as ideas to help with ones that feel unpleasant or negative. All without spending much...or any...money. An Enjoyable Read

After feeling only so-so about Serpent's Kiss, the prequel to this and the second in the Witches of East End series, I went into Winds of Salem not knowing what to expect. However, Winds of Salem managed to restore my love for this series, as it possessed the same charm and witchy goodness that the first one contained.

Winds of Salem picks up a little while after Serpent's Kiss left off. In present day, the Beauchamp family is trying to bring Freya home while dealing with their own wide variety of personal problems, big and small. On the other hand, Freya is back in the 1600s, sent to relive the one thing she'd never thought she have to: the Salem Witch Trials. One of the big problems I had with the second book was the lack of connection I felt to the main characters, but luckily, that problem vanished within this one. I enjoyed how Melissa split the book up into various sections, as it allowed for a well developed sense of what was going on in both worlds and some suspense. In addition, I suddenly seemed to care about the characters once again...something just seemed to click. I particularly enjoyed finding out more about 1600 era Freya as well as seeing more of Freddie who weirdly began to grow on me as the story progressed.

The plot in this was also filled with action and lots of suspense, as mentioned before. I enjoyed seeing more about the Salem Witch Trials. In my opinion, Melissa did a great job of catching the scene and feelings associated with this time, which made the overall reading experience even better. It was also exciting to see what was occurring back in present day, especially when it involved my favorite characters: the pixies. The scenes with them and Freddie were always priceless!

What I liked the most about this book, though, was the ending. Melissa did a great of concluding the major storylines while also leaving room for potential development. In some ways, I really hope she does continue this series.

Sexy, compelling, and magical, Winds of Salem leaves little room for disappointment.

This is the third volume in the Witches of East End series. The passages of time are closed with Freya Beauchamp stuck in 1692 with no way to get back. Freya must relive the horror of the Salem witch trials while her parents frantically try to reopen the passages and rescue her. If they don't succeed, Freya's life will be forfeited forever. Being immortal will not help her this time and she'll never be reborn again.

This story opens in 1692 and I was immediately pulled into the story. I loved Freya's character as we're given a glimpse of what life in Puritan Salem was like for young maids. Back in present time, Freya's parents are frantically trying to find a way to save her along with her sister Ingrid, the local librarian, who is reading every account of the period she can find. The author does a great job of flipping between present day and 1692 to keep the action moving. I was happy to see more of Ingrid as she tries to navigate loving a mortal man. Will Joanna and Norman find a way to reopen the passages and save their daughter? And what's going on with her twin Freddie? He's searching for his Trident and embarks on a perilous journey of his own. Everything is connected in this wonderful magical journey. It's my favorite book so far, but I would recommend that you read books 1 and 2 to get the full flavor of the Beauchamp family. Recommended.

About the Author
Peter G. Tsouras is noted military historian and a leading writer of alternative history with 22 titles to his credit on subjects ranging from Alexander the Great to the American Civil War and the Second World War. He recently retired from the US Government as a senior intelligence officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency. He served with the 1st Battalion 64th Armor on active duty with the US Army and subsequently retired as Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army Reserve. He was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia.

Spencer Jones teaches at the School of History and Cultures at the University of Birmingham, England.

Intriguing counterfactuals

Alternate histories run the risk of being fantasist literature. The ten scenarios presented here at least are plausible, if not always an alternative actually considered by contemporaries. Of course, the plausibility is enhanced by the authors' skill in writing narrative and their technical knowledge. The authors also make clear at the end of each scenario the degree of the departure from reality (in most of the scenarios, the departure is pretty small). The real value of the collection is in showing how the outcome of a battle -- and the war itself -- turned on seemingly obscure contingencies.

For those thinking about purchasing the book, I offer two observations:

-- The book will definitely enhance your understanding of the war. The book, however, is not for one who has only a passing acquaintance with the events of the war.

-- A recurring flaw in the recent flood of books about World War One is the execrable quality of the maps in the books. As for this book, I do not understand why all of the maps must be presented at the beginning of the book instead of being inserted near the beginning of each chapter. The authors' presentations, moreover, would have been more effective if they had included maps showing the alternate beginning and outcome described in each chapter and maps showing the actual beginning and result. And if you're using the Kindle app on a smartphone to read the book, the maps are worthless since you can't zoom in (or at least I was unable to do so). The text of the book would warrant 5 stars, but the maps, ostensibly there to aid the reader, fail so miserably in doing so that I can justify only 4 stars.

Fascinating look at how twists of fate could have changed World War I

It’s always interesting to discuss the “what if’s” of history. To make it outstanding, the story has to be plausible enough for the reader to believe. Peter Tsouras is a master of authoring this type of alternative history.

In “Over the Top”, Tsouras collaborates with Spencer Jones to explore decisions that would have had drastic effects on the outcome of World War I. In the first vignette, Tsouras describes an alternate history if Germany decided to attack east against the Russians instead of west against the French. Beyond the expected battles, Tsouras explores the international effects of various treaties.

Next, Spencer Jones describes the Battle of Ypres, and what could have happened if the Germans had pushed their luck against very thinly spread British lines.

Discussing alternative outcomes of Gallipoli, the failed British-led amphibious assault in Turkey, is a regular pass time of people who studied the Great War. Tsouras provides his perspective on what probably would have happened.

The Battle of Jutland, the greatest naval battle of World War I, is the subject of another of chapter from Jones.

What makes these each of these stories great is that they grab the reader’s interest. Despite very distinct writing styles, Tsouras and Jones both weave fascinating tales of what could have been. For readers unfamiliar with the actual outcomes of the historic vignettes, the authors end each chapter with an explanation of where fiction departed from fact. It was always a surprise to see how short these explanations really were. Just a simple twist of fate could have had vastly different strategic effects in most of these stories.

I agree that it was unusual seeing all of the map graphics presented at the beginning of the book. It would have been more logical to put the charts along with the associated chapters. The book also includes a number of period photographs from World War I.

I am an avid reader of history, but by no means am I an expert on World War I. I recognized the names of the battles, but couldn't describe in detail how any of them played out. Despite the danger in mixing fact and fiction, I absolutely loved the book and highly recommend it. It was an entertaining read.

A different take on counter-factual histories

A very fine discourse on what could have happened given a number of different scenarios of the Great War. It is both interesting and informative to contemplate the impact on modern history had this conflict ended differently. All too often many of the alternative histories
out there today focus on the "what ifs" of a different ending of WW2. A very thought-provoking work that is very timely to the celebration of the
100th anniversary of World War 1.

Starred Review. Epstein's sweeping debut novel, set in early 20th-century China, fictionalizes the life of Chinese painter Pan Yuliang. Born Xiuquing, she is orphaned at a young age and later sold into prostitution by her uncle, who needs the money to support his opium habit. Renamed Yuliang, she becomes the brothel's top girl and soon snags the attention of customs inspector Pan Zanhua, who makes her his concubine. Zanhua sets her up in Shanghai, where she enrolls in the Shanghai Art Academy and early on struggles with life study, unable to separate the nude's monetary value from its value in the currency of beauty. She eventually succeeds, winning a scholarship to study in Europe. But when she returns to China, itself inching toward revolution, the conservative establishment is critical of Yuliang, balking as she adopts Western-style dress and becomes known for her nudes (one newspaper deems her work pornography). Simmering resentments hit a flashpoint at a disastrous Shanghai retrospective exhibit, and the fallout nearly destroys Yuliang's artistic ambition. Convincing historic detail is woven throughout and nicely captures the plight of women in the era. Epstein's take on Yuliang's life is captivating to the last line. (Mar.)

'Artists are after life's reflections, not life itself.'

Jennifer Cody Epstein steps into the pantheon of fine contemporary writers with her first book THE PAINTER FROM SHANGHAI, a work of 'historical fiction' so polished in research, so rich in detail not only of the turbulent period in China during the first half of the 20th century, but also in the mysterious social customs of that country, and a source of insight into the changes in the manner in which the visual world was captured by artists as East and West met and married in the art capital of the world - Paris. Yet overriding all of this fascinating information is Epstein's gift for delivering a story of passion and love with a poetic prose style that comes together in this novel in a manner not unlike creating the painting technique that this novel's heroine describes her world. It is a grand feat and a work worth repeated readings.

Westerners may not be familiar with the name Pan Yuliang, one of the more important Chinese artists who influenced the Post-Impressionist art movement, but in Epstein's eloquent novel we grow to know this gifted artist from her birth as Xiuqing in 1895, and her early years as an orphan protected by her opium-addicted uncle who sold her into a brothel at age fourteen. Enough space is allotted in this tale to allow us to learn the traditions of the 'flower houses' and the brutalities and consequences of life as a prostitute, but Epstein is careful to balance the sad with the radiant in the relationship between the newly renamed Yuliang and her beautiful 'teacher' Jinling with whom she has her first love affair, and Yuliang's subsequent rescue from the brothel through the kindness and concern showered upon her by a handsome gentleman Pan Zanhua - the man with whom she not only enters into the relationship of being his concubine, but also benefits from his support of her position as a woman and as an artist.

The story spans Pan Yuliang's life from these early beginnings to her death in 1977, a life that brought her exposure to the West, with awards from the schools of art in China, Italy and France resulting in renown as a gifted artist who just happened to be a woman with a past, the many private and public pains she endured as her native country moved from the reign of the Emperors through the rise and fall of Chiang Kai-shek, the invasion by the Japanese, and the new order of Communism, and the influence of the world perception of art that included defeat of some of the finest artists as the battle of the sexes altered the perception of painting the nude figure as an acceptable subject matter in a climate of global turmoil.

Epstein manages to write as intricately about history and Chinese tradition as well as luminously about the act of creativity. Few writers can match the descriptive language of the emergence of the visual: 'But true art must contain an emotional range that speaks to the viewer. Speaks...not by lulling them into a false sense of complacency, but by probing. Challenging. Even hurting, if need be. Anything to force us beyond life's easier thoughts.' 'Has it ever occurred to you that our wounds are what drive us to create?...What if those who've lost something compensate for it in their work? In that case the damage helps them. It's what compels them to create...And it might explain why the best artists tend to be the poorest.'

Pan Yuliang has lived and taken care of her uncle, ever since her mother died when she was young. At fourteen years Pan Yuliang was sold to The Hall of Eternal Splendour to become a prostitute. Her uncle did it to play off some loans he had accrued for his habit of opium. After two years of working at The Halls of Eternal Splendour, Pan Yuliang was saved. A young man by the name of Pan Zanhua, who is an inspector. He is so fascinated by Pan that he offers to take her away from Eternal Splendour and make her his wife. For once Pan Yuliang sees Shanghai through a different light. Pan Zanhua recognizes Pan Yuliang interest and talent for painting. He encourages her to become a professional painter but is Pan Yuliang to free spirited for the school and will they even accept a woman.

The Painter from Shanghai is based on true events of Pan Yuliang life. I have to admit that I had never heard of Pan Yuliang. After reading The Painter from Shanghai, I found Pan Yuliang to be a very remarkable woman. She could find beauty in everything around her. This included even during the two years Yuliang was at The Halls of Eternal Splendour. Pan Zanhua was a good husband to Yuliang. He helped Pan Yuliang pursue her dreams no matter what people thought. For this fact Pan Yuliang was able to stand up for what she wanted to paint and not just what sold. I feel Jennifer Cody Epstein did Pan Yuliang justice in this creative masterpiece of a book titled The Painter from Shanghai.

I miss Yuliang

Upon finishing Jennifer Epstein's luminous tale of a courageous, passionate woman's personal and artistic triumph over circumstance, I wept, so much had Yuliang inspired and moved me. She lingers still, thanks to Epstein's lyrical, keenly observed writing, from the smallest detail to the overall epic story arc. Brava.

About the Author
Reza Abbaschian received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. Prior to joining UC Riverside in 2005 as Dean of Engineering and Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, he was Chairman of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Florida. He has also held the positions of Chairman and Professor at the Pahlavi University in Shiraz, Iran, Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Illinois and Visiting Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Abbaschian has more than 230 scientific publications, four patents and eight books. He is a Fellow and the President of ASM International, the largest materials society in the world.

Slightly Disappointed in 4th Ed.

I love materials science and as a bibliophile I anticipated the release this new edition for months. Surely for that price and the 15 year interim since the last edition, I expected a grand volume updated with multicolored illustrations, supplementary sidebars, interactive CD, example problems - sometime suitable for bedtime reading at my wife's side. But alas.

Well, at least the 4th Ed. has a nicer cover, and some of the typos were corrected. The content is still excellent even though the authors had the audacity to omit two chapters on fracture mechanics "to increase the focus of the text" - okay.

My advise: Buy the 3rd edition instead. You'll be getting more for less.

Good reference but not good for teaching yourself

This is in reference to the hard-cover 3rd edition.

The book is good for reference, with just enough detail to be useful in every topic of materials science. You don't normally find atomic structure, microscopy, dislocation theory and fracture mechanics in one volume. It even has basic thermodynamics and diffusion. BUT because it attempts to be comprehensive, it doesn't have enough room to go into depth in all the topics.

I think this book should be titled "Introduction to Materials Science, before the nano-polymer revolution." I think it would be a better title.

I think this is how the book was written:
1. Take a intro to materials book
2. take out electro-opti-magnetic properties
3. add fracture mechanics.
4. make it thicker.

If you want to learn the subject, I think there are better books that are easier to read. But if you want to pull it off your shelf to read bits and pieces, this is pretty good.

Really Weird Author Ranking

The original book (1st and 2nd edition) was written solely by Professor Robert Reed-Hill, where many important philosophy, structure, esp. figures have already been well established. As to the 3rd edition, it is improved, including fracture mechanics, solidification, TEM and SEM material characterization, grain boundaries and dislocations etc, so it is still good one. The 3rd edition is written by Professor Robert Reed-Hill (1st author) and the Reza Abbaschian (2nd author), and is also a good book.

However, as to the 4th edition, it is disappointing since it is almost identical to 3rd edition- major change is the removal of 2 chapters and technically it cannot be even regarded as a new edition.

By then, the original author, Professor Reed-Hill has passed away (~2001). However, the 2nd author of 3rd edition, Reza Abbaschian was listed as 1st author. Despite to very little change of 4th edition, there is a 3rd author Lara Abbaschian coming in, and ranked as 2nd author. Thus, the original author Professor Reed-Hill is moved to the place of 3rd author. The 2nd author Ms. Abbaschian, based on the frontpage of the book, is from an affiliation of business, other than academic institution.

All in all, due to these series of disappointing issues, and the extremely high price as a college book, I would NOT recommend this book any longer. The 3rd edition, instead, is a classic.

Great book. Used it to prepare a Personal Finance course as a professor. Very easy to follow with good examples and useful information of how to manage a personal budget. I believe it could be of great value for many users, not only students.
